A week out from the film’s record breaking weekend, crew who worked on Zach Cregger’s big screen adaptation of Resident Evil have begun sharing behind the scenes footage of their contribution. Turning the most heads, necks, arms, legs and torsos is one clip from choreographer Jakub Hudlický, who shows the acrobatics that became the movie’s most memorable monster.
“[Resident Evil] is finally out in cinemas, and I’ve had the incredible opportunity to work on it as Movement Coordinator,” posted Hudlický. “[We] first came together to explore one big question: how can the Merged Monster moooove?”

Described as “the human tumbleweed” by Cregger but “that Katamari Damacy thing” by fans, the creature is a mess of jumbled up human parts. Strapped together with harnesses, the performers bounce, roll and lurch while figuring new, unnatural ways to link their bodies together.
While the performers served as a framework for what ended up in the film, the production team ultimately used CGI to bring the creature to life. While other monsters were done practically, Cregger told Collider ahead of release that the human approach wasn’t quite there. “I actually did try and get Cirque du Soleil people,” said Cregger, “I strapped five people together. I had them figure out how to do a five person continuous infinite cartwheel, with some people upside down the whole time and it was legs over legs over legs. It was cool,but they had no agility and you could see their heads. It was clearly not going to be what the movie needed it to be.”
While die hard fans were put off by Cregger looking away from source material, his venture into Raccoon City still delivered some bizarre mutants inspired by the type seen in Capcom’s series. Even though this strange mass reminded some of Inside’s “huddle” than anything Umbrella cooked up.
