Asia Matters: CXMT is once again trying to steal the spotlight from the world's largest chipmakers. The Chinese manufacturer is apparently entering mass production of its latest DRAM platform, potentially putting it on par with Samsung and other major players in the memory market.

ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) set the stage at the 2026 World Manufacturing Convention by announcing its latest advancements in chip manufacturing. The Chinese corporation has officially begun mass production of its fifth-generation DRAM technology platform, which is apparently delivering significant gains in both efficiency and competitiveness.

CXMT said that the new "G5 Platform" will provide the company with industry-leading memory manufacturing technology. Its process capabilities can rival the industry's most advanced mass-produced nodes, CXMT stated. The company also highlighted the G5 Platform as a major milestone in its corporate history.

The technology breakthroughs introduced with the G5 Platform include a new self-aligned quadruple patterning (SAQP) technology, with an active-area half-pitch of 11.95nm for memory arrays. The new technology is expected to help close the gap with the most advanced memory platforms available from other industry players, CXMT stated.

Furthermore, the G5 Platform has been re-engineered through the adoption of novel material integration, reaching an array capacitor aspect ratio of 45:1. The technology also implements a DRAM-optimized high-k metal gate process, shrinking the core cell array height to exactly 6,762nm.

CXMT developed the G5 Platform by first creating a "digital twin" of the technology, allowing it to create new approaches to design, tape-out, manufacturing, and yield management. The company said these "virtual" research and development efforts can significantly accelerate the creation of more complex DRAM process models.

The G5 Platform can provide a 50% improvement in die-per-wafer density, which should significantly improve power efficiency. For now, CXMT is using the new DRAM technology to mass-produce two new LPDDR5X products targeting smartphones, laptops, and other portable computing devices.

These new chips offer a 24Gb-per-die capacity, which is 50% larger than the previous generation. CXMT said the G5 Platform will "meet global demand, delivering next-generation memory products with high performance and robust reliability to support the global digital economy."

The Chinese company is also playing an increasingly important role in the struggling memory chip industry. Market valuations are exploding, while Apple could use CXMT's chips in its wildly popular consumer electronics products. The chipmaker is preparing for further growth by increasing wafer output to never-before-seen levels.
