Assistant State Attorney Nina Chapman is going to have another appearance on the Chicago P.D. show. Part of the One Chicago universe, the series follows a tight-knit group of officers as they face off against a wide variety of criminals. Chapman, played by Sara Bues, joined the show's cast during season 9. She serves as the Head of Complex Prosecutions, and she has maintained a complicated relationship with Sergeant Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) and the rest of the police department. She recently left the show after agreeing to tend to an investigation in Denver.

In an interview with TVLine, showrunner Gwen Sigan expanded on Chapman's fate. While she did leave Chicago, Sigan expects to see her return to the show sometime in the future. Sigan even already has an idea of what her return might look like — and how Voight will respond to her reunion. Check out Sigan's full quote below:

She will be back. By the time she’s back, [Voight] is going to be very happy to see her , at least as far as needing that camaraderie that they have and that friendship and that peer. He’ll be sort of longing to have that sounding board back.

What Chapman's Return Means For Chicago P.D.

Voight's Future Will Be Forever Changed

When Chapman first appeared in the show, she did not have strong expectations for Voight. His reputation preceded him, and it promised little more than a vindictive, heartless, and corrupt man, who would offer nothing for her department. Instead, she quickly found that they were birds of a feather. After he discovered that he slept with her witness, he helped to save her career, proving that he was not quite the monster that she expected him to be. Since then, the two have become close, and Chapman even expressed that she has a romantic interest in Voight.

Voight never truly moved on from his wife, the late Camille.

After that bombshell, it was fairly inevitable that Chapman would return. Voight never truly moved on from his wife, the late Camille, which is why he has not had any true romance on the show before. Chapman offers a new dynamic for the Sergeant, and it is unlikely that the producers would let that storyline go without exploring it further. After Hailey Upton left Chicago P.D., Chapman's return is inevitable. Though Detective Emily Martel already replaced Upton, Chapman can offer even more opportunities to fill her role. Voight may even begin to view her as more than just a lawyer.

Our Take On Chapman's Future Return

Voight Needs Something New

Chapman's return is a much-needed element for this story. After all, he has spent an entire arc grappling with his season 11 abduction. A romance could help him recover, which could certainly help produce fresh storylines for the Chicago P.D. cast to explore. Chapman is a truly compelling character, who has already left her mark on the franchise by changing Voight's perspective. Cutting her now would take away from the most compelling drama Voight has been involved in for years. Bringing her back is undoubtedly the right decision.
