Chelsea initiates talks for 18-year-old Atalanta defender Honest Anahor

Chelsea has opened preliminary discussions with the representatives of Honest Ahanor, the 18-year-old defender currently at Atalanta who has become one of the most sought-after young talents in European football.

Atalanta has already turned down two bids for Ahanor this summer, including a reported €34 million offer from Brighton.

From Genoa to Bergamo to everyone’s radar

Born on February 23, 2008, he joined Atalanta from Genoa on July 4, 2025, for a reported base fee of €16 million plus €4 million in potential add-ons. His estimated market value has climbed to somewhere between €23 million and €30 million, and the actual price Atalanta would accept appears to be well north of that range.

Ahanor has logged 22 senior appearances in the 2025/26 season, wearing the number 69 shirt. Primarily a left-back, he is also comfortable operating as a center-back, central midfielder, or winger. At 1.84 meters tall, he possesses both physical stature and technical ability.

He has also earned one cap for the Italy U21 national team.

A crowded pursuit

Chelsea isn’t the only club that has noticed Ahanor’s trajectory. Arsenal and Manchester City are both reportedly monitoring the situation.

Brighton’s rejected €34 million bid is an instructive data point. Given that Atalanta paid €16 million (with €4 million in add-ons) just a year ago, turning down more than double the investment suggests they believe his value will continue to climb.

What a deal could look like

Based on Brighton’s rejected €34 million offer, any successful bid would likely need to clear €40 million, and possibly more depending on add-on structures and sell-on clauses.

Chelsea’s talks are described as initial, meaning there’s a long road between where things stand now and an actual transfer agreement.
