US singer Chappell Roan disappointed her fans during the Laneway Festival over the weekend when she refused to perform a 'shoey'.

The 27-year-old was met with chants to take part in the bizarre Australian 'tradition' - which consists of drinking beer from a shoe - during her Gold Coast gig on Saturday.

Video of the hitmaker interacting with the crowd over the revolting request was later shared on TikTok.

'Oh, oh, oh, OH. That's what you're saying – drink a beer out of the shoe?' she commented after hearing fans chant, 'Shoey'.

But the singer would not be swayed, telling the crowd to loud cheers: 'No. No, no, no, no, I want to talk about being gay.'

Roan came out as lesbian in 2024, saying at the time, 'I'm a little repulsed at the thought of even kissing a guy because no one's going to be as good as girls.'

It is commonplace for fans at concerts to chant 'shoo-ey! shoo-ey!' in the hope the performer will agree to take part in the tradition.

Several visiting artists have been persuaded by their adoring fans Down Under to perform the vomit-inducing party trick.

Last month, Benson Boone became the latest touring artist to try out the notorious drinking game.

The 22-year-old hitmaker was on stage at Sydney's Hordern Pavilion when he took a break between tunes to participate in the 'tradition'.

He departed from shoey tradition and used water from a bottle he had on stage instead of drinking beer from the shoe.

'When in Australia,' he joked before he filled the footwear with water.

Chappell, who is visiting Australia for the first time, will continue to headline the Laneway Festival as it travels to Melbourne on February 13.

The shoey is one of Australia's iconic traditions which doubles up as both a hazing punishment and a celebratory ritual.

It was made increasingly popular by famed sportsmen like Formula One driver Daniel Ricciardo and UFC fighter Tai Tuivasa.

It is the practice of pouring alcohol into a sweaty shoe then skolling it.

In the past, the tradition has come under attack as critics - including prominent Australian musicians - call for it to be banned.

'My shoe? My shoe is disgusting. I can't drink out of my f**king shoe, what's wrong with ya'll?' Lizzo told the crowd at her Sydney show in 2023.

'This is ne of the most disgusting traditions I've ever witnessed,' Harry said, before necking a drink from his $1,170 Adidas x Gucci shoe.

'I feel like a different person. I feel ashamed of myself,' he said post-shoey.

'It feels so personal. Such an intimate moment to be shared with so many people. I'll be discussing this with my therapist at length.'
