Selena Gomez opened up about the damaging effects of vaping last week, explaining the bad habit has 'changed her voice' but she struggled to quit.

Hitting out at trolls who mocked her new sound, Selena, 34, shared: 'I'm not gonna be able to change my voice. I vaped nicotine a lot and just so everyone knows that's somewhat vaped, nicotine is so hard to quit.

'I just wanted to say, if you're going through it or if you're even trying to vape, it's just not worth it.

'It's so stupid, and it's changed my voice. If you guys don't like listening to my voice, that's totally understandable, I don't mind. Just don't listen to it.'

Vowing to stay off vapes for good, she concluded: 'I am really excited because I stopped and I just hope I can keep it up.

'It's really hard, but know if you are going through something, you can get through it too. It sucks.'

Yet Selena is far from the only celebrity who's fallen foul of the habit...

Lola Young

Earlier this month, Lola Young revealed the impact her vaping addiction has begun to have on her health, as she admitted her lungs feel 'battery powered'.

The singer, 25, said she has no plans to quit until she turns 45, but moaned that her vape use has turned breathing into a 'chore' and 'hard work'.

In a video posted on TikTok, Lola confessed she was previously warned she would start to feel the impact of vaping after several years of use.

New government crackdowns to make the UK a 'smoke-free nation' have already come into effect, and a UK-wide ban on the sale of vapes and nicotine products to under-18s is due to come into force on October 29.

Lola told her followers: 'Someone once said to me, Lola there will be a day when you wake up, you'll be 25 or 26, from a deep sleep and you'll start to feel the effects of vaping.

'And do you know what I said? I said "nah" and rolled my eyes.

'But let me tell you something, let me tell you something, the day has come. That day has come, where my lungs feel like they're battery powered, like they're just one big battery, and breathing feels like a chore.

'It feels like hard work, it feels like I should be paid for breathing. I feel like I should be paid to breathe, a good wage £30 an hour. And it feels like there'll be no tomorrow.

'But let me tell you something, I'll try to quit when I'm 45.'

Lily James previously admitted she was shocked to learn that her prolific vaping habit has ruined her teeth.

'I prided myself that I'd never had a filling,' the actress, 37, told the Daily Mail last year. 'I did just recently get one - I was so upset.

'Apparently it's from flavoured vapes, which are full of sugar. They f***ed my teeth.'

While most e-cigarettes don't contain sugar, dentists warn flavoured vapes can still damage teeth.

The sweet flavourings are acidic and erode enamel, leaving smiles more vulnerable to decay.

TV's Mr Nasty Simon Cowell used to smoke 80 cigarettes a day until he decided to cut down when he became a father in 2014.

He started vaping two years later, explaining: 'The idea is to cut down on the number.

‘The vape has been successful. It’s a good one, it tastes nice and sweet.’

Simon also said that he does not smoke around Eric, 12, his only child with partner Lauren, 49, but worried what he would do if his son asked him to quit when he got older.

In 2023, Simon fully transitioned to vaping, ditching cigarettes completely after a bout of laryngitis led him to lose his voice.

He explained: 'I am now vaping, so I am not quite out of the woods, but I have not had a cigarette in about three or four weeks.

'It was really, really tough because I lost my voice a few weeks ago and when that happened obviously I couldn’t smoke, so that helped.

'I thought, "If I have done four days without a cigarette, I can do a week", and then I thought, "This is the moment, touch wood". It had to happen sooner or later.'

According to Page Six, Leonardo once asked a photographer not to publish a photo of him with a cigarette because he didn’t want his mum to know that he smoked.

Lily Allen

Lily Allen revealed this month she's trying to quit vaping after using it as a 'crutch' following her split from David Harbour (pictured on stage in Chicago in April)

Lily Allen was 'delighted' to win a lucrative contract to advertise Vype e-cigarettes in 2019.

Now, however, the Smile singer says vaping simply makes her sad.

She said this month: 'I'm actually trying to give up vaping now, annoyingly. It's just not serving me any more.'

Lily, 41, who had a bitter split from her second husband, Stranger Things star David Harbour, added: 'It's been a coping mechanism and a crutch for me, but I'm feeling in a pretty good place and I think I can get rid of it.'

Lily previously revealed how she turned to vaping while writing her heartbreak revenge album West End Girl following the end of her marriage.

The singer and David, 51, met on Raya and married in Vegas in 2020, but legally separated last year and their divorce proceedings followed shortly after.

She told Interview magazine of writing West End Girl in ten days: 'I was vaping and smoking cigarettes at the time, so it was a Parliament Light in one hand, a vape in the other, and lots of crying, lots of storytelling.

'I was processing a long relationship, and so things I hadn’t really considered before were coming up and I was like, "Do you think that when this was happening?"'

She added: 'If I didn’t vape, I’d be smoking cigarettes, and that would be disgusting.'

Kate Garraway managed to ditch vaping when she appeared on I’m A Celebrity in 2019 – only for her cravings to return four years later.

The ITV presenter explained: 'I think we had some props in here or something ridiculous, and I picked it up and I was instantly addicted, like beyond anything!

I couldn’t believe it and it made me realise how, particularly those disposable ones, are so addictive.

'The last thing I want to do is in any way sanction [vaping], because I don’t now.

'But my experience was, after Billy was born, I did smoke before and I was craving going back to smoking [but] didn’t want to.

'I thought [vaping] was amazing, because it didn’t smell, at that point you could do it anywhere, it must have been like smoking in the Seventies, you didn’t have to stand outside.

'Everybody said it was better for you, and I did feel much better. I got the nicotine hit.'

Kate then confessed she 'hated herself' for the habit.

While she showed the image, she revealed she had been given a scare, writing: 'I saw it [the x-ray]. It's so bad the vaping, it's so bad for people.'

Katie, 48, also revealed her mum Amy's terminal diagnosis with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis – which led to her undergoing a lung transplant in 2022 – so she was further determined to improve her health.

She revealed she had spoken to Amy and her step-father Paul about her addiction, saying: 'I had a word with mum and Paul and said my new year's resolution is to give up vapes.

'I'm lucky I've had my lungs checked so there's no damage to my lungs.'

'Well, I smoked for 30 years. I started when I was nine years old. I grew up in Brooklyn,' the singer previously told The Evening Standard.

'Then I stopped about 15, 20 years ago. Then I just started in Las Vegas and the band and I went down to a little club and somebody offered me a cigarette. And I was back.

'Within a week I was back. Not on a pack a day, 'cause when I was really smoking I was on three packs a day - non filters. Oh yeah. I was a great smoker.'

Over the years Barry has experienced multiple health woes including vocal cord issues, bronchial infections and throat cancer, which was successfully treated after its discovery in 2020.

Barry added that vaping may not work for everybody but it works for him.

'Do they work? They do for me, my band and my crew, all of us who hated smoking but couldn't stop,' he told the paper.

'Nobody really knows the dangers of them yet but I think puffing on a fruit stick all day can't be good for [sweating emoji].'

Natasha Lyonne

Natasha Lyonne has been open about her struggles with quitting both cigarettes and vapes over the years

Natasha Lyonne has been open about her struggles with quitting both cigarettes and vapes over the years.

In 2024, The Orange Is The New Black actress, 47, took to X/Twitter to share: ‘I’ve quit quitting vaping. Quitting cigarettes was a big enough swing for a while.

‘Pretty sure I’m smoking the equivalent of 40 packs a day now instead of 4. No bueno.

'Take it from your grandfather, keep your lungs clean, kids. (And my wife’s name out your mouth obvs.)’

She seemingly took the habit back up as the following year she said in an interview that she planned to give up vaping and smoking again.

Natasha said: 'I've tried really hard to quit smoking, and I then was vaping a lot. And I was vaping at an amount that I thought was disturbing.

'I started vaping a certain kind of newfangled thing that only a teenager should have. It lit up in places. It was nauseating. I was concerned.

'Now I think I'm going to have to quit smoking and vaping. I think I'm going to have to go whole hog. I don't think vaping is very healthy. And I know smoking is not.'

She explained: 'Giving up things is really hard. I can't remember the specific turning point. Last week... it's always emotions with me. Like, I know I'm doing that... I'm craving relaxation'

Vicky Pattison revealed, while she felt ashamed, she considered vaping a 'training essential' while she was competing on Strictly Come Dancing last year.

Speaking on her Get A Grip podcast, Vicky said that despite 'not being proud of it' she needed the relaxation.

The TV personality explained: 'Giving up things is really hard. I can't remember the specific turning point. Last week... it's always emotions with me. Like, I know I'm doing that... I'm craving relaxation.

'In a world where I can't cultivate it naturally because my schedule's a bit unrelenting, I'm doing it synthetically. I think I will give it up at some point, I am really trying.

'I was about five, six days in, but then it all unravelled. So I'm back vaping. I'm not proud of it, but it's who I am. I am a vapist!'
