Celebrate 20 Years of ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ With These Gorgeous Books

1 hour ago 7

Pan’s Labyrinth marks its 20th anniversary this year, though its stunning artistry (and themes condemning far-right politics) remain as timeless as ever. To celebrate, Guillermo del Toro‘s fantastical classic is getting a 4K theatrical showcase, in both 2D and 3D versions, courtesy of Cineverse and Fathom Entertainment. That’s coming October 9. But even earlier, Insight Editions is releasing a pair of commemorative books that look nearly as beautiful as the film itself.

First up is Pan’s Labyrinth: The Complete Screenplay, with a foreword by director Baz Luhrmann, plus an introduction by del Toro himself. As you might expect, this won’t just be a bound copy of the screenplay; it will also feature “a wide range of materials from the film’s production, including specially commissioned new art by visual artist Tomás Hijo, original concept art, and storyboards. From early visual designs to moments captured during filming, the book traces the development of the story’s characters, environments, and atmospheres, revealing how the film’s distinctive blend of fantasy and historical drama was brought to life.”

It will cost $50 and arrive September 8. Here’s a glimpse at some of its contents:

The other Insight volume is Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth: Inside the Creation of a Modern Fairy Tale—20th Anniversary Edition. It’s described as a “revised and expanded” version that includes a foreword by Steven Spielberg and a new preface from del Toro.

Inside the Creation of a Modern Fairy Tale “explores the film’s creative journey, from the director’s early ideas through casting, the challenging shoot, and the overwhelmingly positive critical response. Along with rare concept art and photography, there are exclusive insights from the director, the stars, the producers, and other key players involved in crafting this dark, thrilling masterpiece.”

This book is $60 and releases September 8, though superfans might want to consider the limited edition version. Just 500 are available, and the first 100 come signed by del Toro ($350; unsigned versions are $175). It comes bound in a fancy case with even fancier slipcase, and includes “a matching portfolio containing four prints produced exclusively for Insight Editions by Tomás Hijo, as well as two facsimiles of concept art by Raúl Monge and Sergio Sandoval, and two facsimile pages from the film-used Book of Crossroads by Esther Gili.”

Here’s a look at this release. Will you be picking up one of these books (learn more on the Insight Editions site)—or revisiting Pan’s Labyrinth when it comes back to theaters (learn more on the Fathom Entertainment site)?
