Prior to its theatrical re-release in October, Guillermo del Toro's fantasy film Pan's Labyrinth has unveiled a new poster with artwork by James Jean. The Spanish-language masterpiece, which earned its filmmaker his first Oscar nomination, is celebrating its 20th anniversary with the help of Fathom Entertainment and Cineverse.

Pan's Labyrinth remains one of the highest-rated movies of del Toro's career, winning 3 of its 6 nominations and receiving a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It's also one of his most widely-discussed, as the allegorical nature of Ofelia's story keeps it relevant in the decades since its inception. While he has gone on to make multiple award-winning movies, his 2006 classic remains the perfect encapsulation of del Toro's signature style.

That style is honored in James Jean's new poster, which can be seen below. The artist, who has previously collaborated with del Toro, shared some details about his process and his own feelings about the film.

Pans Labyrinth James Jean Key Art

Creating a poster for Pan’s Labyrinth has long been a dream of mine, so this feels like a true full-circle moment. When I first saw the film in 2007, I was creating covers for Fables, the DC/Vertigo comic series, while also developing a fairytale-inspired campaign for Prada. Nearly two decades later, it’s an immense honor that Guillermo invited me to create an image for a film so deeply embedded in the creative DNA of my formative years.

As for the poster itself, Jean's artwork incorporates symbolism from Pan's Labyrinth - another testament to the enduring power of the film two decades later.

My composition began with a crescent moon, a recurring symbol in Pan’s Labyrinth that marks Ofelia’s passage through cycles of transformation. From that shape, I built a world suspended between above and below, where the Faun, the Pale Man, and Ofelia live in an interconnected realm that reflects the film’s tension between fantasy and reality, innocence and experience, compassion and submission.

At the center of the composition, Ofelia holds a key. The key suggests that the passage into adulthood cannot be unlocked by authority, inheritance, or destiny alone, but through moral choice. By facing fear and remaining true to her conscience, Ofelia discovers the courage to find her own way through the labyrinth.

ScreenRant confirmed that a new trailer for the theatrical re-release will soon follow, but in the meantime, fans can pore over the gorgeous details present in Jean's interpretation of the Guillermo del Toro classic.

Pan's Labyrinth returns to theaters on October 9, where it will be released in 4K, 3D, and premium HDR by Barco.
