Cardano Foundation announces departure of CTO Giorgio Zinetti on August 31

Giorgio Zinetti, the Chief Technology Officer of the Cardano Foundation, is leaving the organization at the end of this month. His departure, announced on August 10, becomes effective August 31, capping a tenure of approximately two and a half years at the helm of the Foundation’s technical operations.

Zinetti joined the Cardano Foundation as CTO in May 2024, bringing with him a background in digital identity and enterprise technology. His exit, which he attributed in part to upcoming parental leave, removes one of the more visible technical leaders from an organization that oversees one of crypto’s largest proof-of-stake ecosystems.

What Zinetti built during his tenure

During his roughly 2.5 years in the role, Zinetti was responsible for guiding the Foundation’s technical strategy, steering product development, and scaling projects designed to drive broader adoption of the Cardano blockchain.

Before joining the Cardano Foundation, Zinetti co-founded PROCIVIS AG, a Swiss company focused on digital identity solutions. He also held board positions at other technology companies, giving him a blend of startup scrappiness and corporate governance experience that suited the Foundation’s dual identity as both a blockchain steward and an enterprise-facing organization.

The Cardano Foundation acknowledged Zinetti’s contributions in a statement, emphasizing its commitment to maintaining continuity across technical ventures and enterprise initiatives.

No successor, no interim plan disclosed

The Foundation has not named a successor, nor has it publicly outlined interim measures for covering the CTO’s responsibilities after August 31. The Foundation indicated it would rely on collaboration with existing senior leaders to navigate the transition.

Zinetti himself struck a warm tone in his announcement, expressing gratitude toward his colleagues and framing the move as a personal decision rather than a professional disagreement.

What this means for the Cardano ecosystem

Cardano has been working through a series of governance enhancements and technical roadmap developments, including the ongoing maturation of its on-chain governance framework. The Foundation’s enterprise-facing work, its partnerships, and its contributions to ecosystem tooling all fall squarely within the CTO’s domain.

The Foundation plays a distinct role from Input Output (the research and development arm led by Charles Hoskinson) and EMURGO (the commercial arm), so Zinetti’s departure doesn’t necessarily slow down core protocol development.
