Canada doubles tariffs on US steel and aluminum to 50%

Canada will double its counter-tariff on US steel and aluminum to 50% as Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government responds to new US levies, Bloomberg reported.

The measures, which take effect Sept. 8, affect about C$27.6 billion, or $20 billion, in US imports. The value roughly matches the impact of the tariffs imposed by the United States on Canadian goods.

Other products facing new 50% duties include golf clubs, smartphones, video-game consoles, and apparel. Fish, furniture, fresh cheese, and freezers are also among the targeted goods.

The move marks a harder line from Carney’s government as Canadian businesses prepare for higher import costs and the two countries remain locked in a trade dispute.
