Buck and Eddie let loose, but it looks like tragedy follows them everywhere.
While weekly cases are the bread and butter of all procedurals, character work is what keeps people invested. The death of Bobby in 9-1-1 season 8 admittedly soured some fans on the show, and it doesn't help that season 9 has largely kept Buck and Eddie separate — two of the show's most important characters and arguably its most exciting relationship thus far. Luckily, it seems like that's all about to change when ABC releases its milestone episode.
ABC (via TVPromos) has released the official trailer for 9-1-1 season and 9-1-1: Nashville's first crossover event. In the promo clip, it seems like Buck and Eddie will have a fun bonding trip to Nashville, and while attending a fun party, things go sideways. That's when they have their run-in with Don and Station 113's crew. Watch the video below:
Titled "Dads and Cads," ABC has yet to release the official synopsis for the outing. Based on what's revealed in the trailer, however, it's clear that Buck and Eddie will find themselves on a trip outside of Los Angeles, which means that this isn't going to be your typical tragedy call for the Ryan Murphy-co-created procedural on network TV. What brings them to Nashville is uncertain, but considering how 9-1-1 season 9 has largely ignored their friendship, it might be the show's way of making up to it.
It's no secret that there's clamor for Buck and Eddie's friendship to eventually turn romantic. Showrunner Tim Minear has addressed the matter recently, and while he cannot commit to that eventually happening, he maintains that he's a fan of that possible story potential. Whether that actually happens anytime in the near future is unclear. That said, at least reports point to ABC eventually renewing 9-1-1 for a milestone 10th year, giving the show extra time to pay off the storyline.
Almost a year after Bobby's jaw-dropping death, Peter Krause definitively closes the door on his beloved character's potential return to the ABC show.
What isn't revealed in the trailer is how the rest of the 118 and the Los Angeles-based crew will be involved in this endeavor — if at all. It's worth noting that the event is billed as a "crossover," which means that Buck and Eddie's cameo will unlikely be the end of 9-1-1's representation in this upcoming special. There are snippets of Maddie, Athena, Chim, and the rest, but it's curious if their stories all tie to whatever is happening in Nashville.
