Broadway To Dim Lights For Robert Duvall, Isiah Whitlock Jr. And Others Next Week

All 41 Broadway theater marquees will dim simultaneously on Tuesday, March 10, to honor late actors Robert Duvall, Isiah Whitlock Jr. and John Cunningham, The Gin Game playwright D.L. Coburn, and actress, choreographer, and dancer Carmen de Lavallade, among others.

The group dimming, performed quarterly to honor individuals who have left an indelible mark on Broadway, will commence at 6:45 p.m. ET on Tuesday. The announcement was made today by The Broadway In Memoriam Committee.

Others honored by the dimming are Broadway and West End director Frank Dunlop, Beauty and the Beast and Wicked actor Bret Hanna-Shuford and longtime theater journalist Harry Haun.

Though primarily recognized for his film and television work, Duvall began his career on the stage, and appeared on Broadway in Wait Until Dark (1966) and American Buffalo (1977). Whitlock (The Wire, Chi-Raq) appeared on Broadway in Mastergate (1989), The Merchant of Venice (1989) and The Iceman Cometh (1999).

Cunningham’s many Broadway credits include original productions of Cabaret, Zorba, 1776, Company, The Sisters Rosensweig and, perhaps most memorably, 1990’s Six Degrees of Separation. De Lavallade’s Broadway credits include her 1954 debut House of Flowers.

Occurring on the second Tuesday in September, December, March and June, the quarterly dimmings were launched last year to widen the scope of artists, creators and industry professionals honored. Individual dimmings to honor those who have made “a profoundly significant and lasting impact” are announced separately from the quarterly dimmings.
