Broadway‘s “Fallen Angels,” a revival of the Noël Coward comedy-of-manners led by Rose Byrne and Kelli O’Hara, will be livestreamed on BroadwayHD, a theater-centric streaming service.
It will air for subscribers on June 5 during the 7 p.m. performance. That’s two days before the show closes and two days before the Tony Awards, where “Fallen Angels” has five nominations, including best revival and lead actress for Byrne and O’Hara.
“We’re thrilled to bring this stellar production of Noël Coward’s comedy to BroadwayHD, so audiences around the world can watch it from the comfort of their homes ahead of this year’s Tony Awards,” said BroadwayHD co-founders Stewart F. Lane and Bonnie Comley. “The incredible cast are sure to make you laugh all night long!”
“Fallen Angels,” which opened at the Todd Haimes Theatre on April 19, follows two upper-class wives who reminisce about their pre-marital affairs with the same man, who happens to be coming to town while their husbands are away on a golf trip. Tracee Chimo, Mark Consuelos, Christopher Fitzgerald and Aasif Mandvi round out the cast. The limited engagement, which began previews on March 27, runs through June 7.
When “Fallen Angels” premiered in 1925, the play was initially censored by England’s Lord Chamberlain, citing the “discussion of pre-marital sex” and the “quite unnecessary frankness of expression among women.” Though Coward toned things down to get the Lord Chamberlain’s seal of approval, he added the raunchy lines back in during a 1958 revision. “Fallen Angels” first landed on Broadway in 1927 and was last revived in 1956.
In Variety’s review of “Fallen Angels,” critic Brent Lang praised the performances of Byrne and O’Hara while noting the production no longer seems as naughty as it did when Coward wrote the show more than 100 years ago. “Although scandalous in its day for its frank depiction of female desire and open discussion of infidelity and premarital sex,” he wrote, “the show seems positively tame post-‘Sex and the City,’ ‘Bottoms’ and ‘Booksmart.'”
