Brandon Sanderson Officially Announces Surprise Re-Release

While the author is best known for his interconnected fantasy world, the Cosmere, he has branched outside it many times. One of his most underrated non-Cosmere projects is the superhero series The Reckoners, a trilogy released from 2013 to 2016, plus an audio-exclusive spinoff in 2021. The book series asks “What if the superheroes were evil?” Years after writing the prologue, he sat down and wrote the books. The novels center on the eponymous team that studies and assassinates the superpowered individuals. The Reckoners is usually classified as YA, but it does contain some mature themes, making it more appropriate for older teens and adults.

Since the 2021 spinoff, co-authored by Steven Michael Bohls, Sanderson hasn't really done much with The Reckoners, but that just changed. On top of that, the re-release is also a great sign that Brandon Sanderson isn’t forgetting about stories outside the Cosmere. There’s no doubt that the Cosmere universe is his focus. Book-wise, he has so much going on between The Stormlight Archive, Mistborn, and Hoid’s Travails. He is also working on Apple TV's Mistborn movie and, eventually, The Stormlight Archive TV show. It would be easy for him to forget about the other book series.

However, The Reckoners isn’t affiliated with any Brandon Sanderson literary universe, and it’s getting a re-release. The Cytoverse will expand on September 1, 2026, with the new sci-fi book Blightfall by Brandon Sanderson and Janci Patterson. Sanderson also reassured readers that the sequel to The Rithmatist is still in the works, though it isn’t a top priority (via Collider). He’s also co-authoring the musical urban fantasy book Songs of the Dead, the first in The Strata Wars series, with Peter Orullian.

Ultimately, anything in Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere universe will always be his most popular selection of books, but The Reckoner's re-release is a reminder that he has many other great things to offer as well.
