Bosch's recasting marks some key changes for one of Prime's biggest shows. It's hard to believe John Travolta was almost cast as Bosch when a film version of the novel series was pitched during the 1990s. Detective "Harry" Bosch is an intense, brooding man of action, but Travolta's tendency to get real hammy - even in pitch dark thrillers like 1999's The General's Daughter - made him feel like a bad fit.
Titus Welliver later became the first actor to play Bosch in live-action when Prime's show debuted in 2014. It was huge success, which is only underlined by the fact it keeps spawning new shows. The Bosch TV franchise thus far includes the spinoffs Legacy - which ran for three seasons - and the Maggie Q-fronted Ballard, where Welliver's Bosch guest-starred.
One show Welliver won't be part of is the upcoming prequel Bosch: Start of Watch, detailing Harry's time as an LAPD rookie during the early 1990s. In a break from the source material, Start of Watch isn't adapting any of author Michael Connolly's books, though it will pull inspiration from details the books have sprinkled about the character's past.

Harry Bosch is a detective with the LAPD. What is his full first name — the one “Harry” is short for?
AHarrison BHieronymus CHarold DHenry

✗ Case closed — incorrectly! The answer is Hieronymus. Harry’s mother named him after the Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch, whose surreal works depicted visions of hell and human folly. It’s a fitting namesake for a detective who spends his career staring into the darkness of human nature.

ALance Reddick BJason Gedrick CMark Rolston DJamie Hector

Harry Bosch is a devoted fan of jazz music, and the show’s soundtrack is steeped in it. Which real-life jazz musician is Bosch’s all-time favorite, frequently heard playing on his turntable?
AMiles Davis BArt Pepper CJohn Coltrane DThelonious Monk
✓ Correct! Art Pepper is Harry Bosch’s favorite jazz musician, a West Coast jazz alto saxophonist whose troubled life and brilliant artistry mirror Bosch’s own duality. Bosch listens to Pepper’s records at home in his hillside house overlooking the Cahuenga Pass, often while working a case late at night.
✗ Case closed — incorrectly! The answer is Art Pepper. While Bosch appreciates many jazz artists, his deepest connection is to Art Pepper — a brilliant but self-destructive LA jazz musician. Pepper’s music is practically a character in the show, setting the melancholic, contemplative tone of Bosch’s late-night case reviews.

After the original “Bosch” ended its seven-season run on Amazon, Titus Welliver returned in a spinoff series. What is the title of this continuation?
ABosch: Cold Case BBosch: Dark Sacred Night CBosch: Legacy DBosch: City of Bones
✓ Correct! “Bosch: Legacy” continues the story on Amazon Freevee (later moved to Prime Video), with Bosch now working as a private investigator. His daughter Maddie, played by Madison Lintz, has followed in his footsteps and become an LAPD officer herself, creating a compelling new dynamic.
✗ Case closed — incorrectly! The answer is “Bosch: Legacy.” The spinoff picks up with Harry Bosch as a PI after leaving the LAPD, while his daughter Maddie begins her own career as a patrol officer. The title reflects both Harry’s legacy as a detective and the legacy he’s passing to his daughter.

Harry Bosch’s personal history is deeply traumatic and shapes his obsession with justice. What happened to his mother when he was a child?
AShe was murdered, and the case was never solved BShe abandoned him and disappeared CShe died in a car accident DShe was wrongfully imprisoned

✗ Case closed — incorrectly! The answer is she was murdered, and the case was never solved. Marjorie Lowe’s unsolved murder haunted Harry throughout his life and directly shaped his philosophy that “everybody counts or nobody counts” — the belief that every victim deserves justice regardless of who they were.

Start of Watch also marks a recasting of Bosch, with Cameron Monaghan stepping into the shoes of a young Harry. If the prequel is a hit, it could mark a soft reboot for the whole property.
Cameron Monaghan Bosch Casting Is A Key Step In The Franchise
Monaghan has a tough job taking on a role that Welliver has defined, but if the series is to continue, it needs to mix things up. While many prequels can be totally unnecessary, a show revealing how a naive rookie evolved into the gruff cop seen in the original series has a lot of potential.
Bosch: Start of Watch feels like it has shades of Training Day to it, with Harry being taken under the wing of a tough vet named Eli (Omari Hardwick). While devotees of Bosch might feel like the prequel is all about replacing Welliver with a younger model, this recasting could set up the show's future for years to come.
The first adaptation of a Michael Connolly novel was Blood Work, a 2002 thriller starring and directed by Clint Eastwood; the author was not a fan of the final product.
Between Bosch and Legacy, the franchise is running a little low on ways it can explore Harry's modern-day adventures. Start of Watch, however, is tackling a key phase of his career, and it would be easy to see Monaghan's Bosch carrying on for years to come if the prequel proves a hit.
On the flipside, if Bosch: Start of Watch fails to connect and is canceled after one season, that might spell the beginning of the end. The recasting is a tricky gamble - but it's one the franchise needs to attempt.
Titus Welliver Isn't Going Anywhere As Bosch Just Yet
Welliver is a character actor who has been stealing movies and shows for years. In Bosch, he foundly found a leading role perfectly suited to his talents. It should be noted that while Start of Watch is a positive step for Prime's thriller saga, that doesn't mean Welliver isn't returning to the role either.
Welliver's Bosch will be back for Ballard season two, though he will only appear in select episodes. While there might not be another show centered totally around Welliver's Bosch, Harry will almost certainly be part of future seasons of Ballard or other spinoffs that come down the pipe.
It should also be noted that Welliver has a busy schedule too, such starring in the MGM+ crime series The Westies. That might help explain his reduced presence in the franchise at this time. One thing it would be fun for Prime to explore is a Bosch movie, just like the Jack Ryan series attempted with 2026's Ghost War; ideally, a Bosch film would be far less generic.
If Ballard season three happens, having Bosch and Ballard partner up for an entire series would be cool too. Either way, Welliver isn't heading for the exit just yet.
