Blue Lock Season 2, Episode 14, serves as the ending of the U-20 arc with a favorable outcome for the future of Ego’s project and for his diamonds in the rough in what has been, despite the recent controversies, the best match of the series so far. But also, the finale sets up Isagi and Rin’s rivalry while additionally revealing a major twist and antagonist for the upcoming Blue Lock Season 3.

As has become the norm in recent anime adaptations, the Blue Lock season 2 finale includes a post-credits scene, important to the future of Blue Lock’s characters in the new season. While the first part of the post-credits scene teases the new arc of the series, the Neo Egoist League Arc, where the Blue Lock players will reach new heights, it also features a beloved character whose return would change what fans thought about the project.

Blue Lock Season 2 Post-Credits Scene Brings Back Rensuke Kunigami After Being Eliminated in the Second Selection

Kunigami Will Return for the Neo Egoist League as the Wild Card

Blue Lock Season 2's post-credits scenes, which adapted parts of chapters #149 and #151 of the manga, included a modified dialogue by Ego from episode 1, where he says that “the world’s greatest striker will find where soccer is most intense and suddenly appears there,” just as it shows a wild card sign and a door opening revealing Kunigami. However, Kunigami has a dark expression contrasting with his former passionate attitude, teasing that his personality has changed after experiencing defeat.

While the characteristics of this Wild Card program have yet to be revealed, Kunigami’s appearance reveals that he will return in the upcoming season as a part of the players of the Neo Egoist League. Kunigami was one of the main characters in Blue Lock Season 1, and his failure to advance during the second selection after losing to Ryusei Shido was shocking to many fans of the series, so his return is great news and creates intrigue about the circumstances surrounding this mysterious program and his noticeable change.

What Happened to Kunigami After His Elimination?

The Anime Skipped Kunigami’s Scenes From the Manga To Make His Return Even Bigger

Even though Kunigami’s return was shocking to viewers, manga readers already knew about his impending comeback to the Blue Lock Project, not only due to his immense popularity but also because it was hinted at much earlier in the source material and skipped in the anime adaptation. The last time that Kunigami appeared in the anime was in BL episode 24, when he is seen visibly affected leaving the field in a dark hallway.

But in the manga, chapter #94, just as Kunigami is walking, the hallway splits into two corridors with an arrow pointing towards the exit and another towards a door with a Wild Card sign, revealing that it was a second chance for him, so that he would not lose his opportunity to be the world's greatest striker. There it’s most likely that Kunigami had to face a hostile environment, incredible pressure, and extreme physical training, which seems to have changed his essence.

Additionally, the circumstances of his loss were also featured in chapters #88 and #89, which covered the match of Kunigami and Reo against Shido and Igaguri. This unadapted scene in the anime was probably to maintain the mystery among viewers regarding Shido’s playing style before the tryouts and for Kunigami’s return to be more impactful. Nevertheless, this scene, in addition to the small cameo of Michael Kaiser, the major antagonist of the Neo Egoist League who will collide with Isagi, builds up anticipation for the upcoming season, where fans should expect the story to get even better.
