Bitcoin demonstrated stability around the $76,000 mark on Wednesday following the Federal Reserve’s decision to increase its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points — marking the central bank’s first rate adjustment since July 2023. The policy rate now stands within a target range of 3.75% to 4%.
Bitcoin (BTC) PriceCurrent market data shows Bitcoin trading at $76,663, representing a 1.35% gain over the previous 24-hour period. While US equity markets responded negatively to the announcement, Bitcoin displayed minimal immediate volatility.
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh emphasized that inflation levels continue to exceed targets despite signs of economic strengthening across the United States. Warsh further indicated that current financial conditions lack sufficient restrictiveness. The central bank’s latest forecasts project a median policy rate reaching 4.1% by the conclusion of 2026, suggesting another rate adjustment is probable before year-end.
According to Cooper Duschang, a research analyst at Talos, market participants had already anticipated this policy shift. “Bitcoin has demonstrated notable resilience, maintaining stability around pre-announcement price levels despite downward pressure on equity markets,” Duschang explained.
Cryptocurrency analyst Ali Martinez from Ali Charts offered perspective on potential downside scenarios. “Should the rate increase trigger a Bitcoin correction, my response won’t be one of concern,” Martinez stated. “My focus is on the Short-Term Holder Realized Price sitting near $71,200 as a strategic accumulation level. Should market conditions present that entry point, I’ll be positioned to act.”
Spot Market Activity vs. Derivatives Trading
Duschang identified significant activity occurring beneath headline price movements. Perpetual futures markets experienced net selling pressure, with approximately $82 million in Bitcoin and $68 million in Ether liquidated within the first hour post-announcement. Concurrently, Bitcoin spot markets registered approximately $15.5 million in net buying activity.
Exchange flow data revealed that roughly 2,170 Bitcoin were deposited to exchanges immediately following the rate decision, subsequently followed by withdrawals totaling 1,260 Bitcoin. Duschang characterized this pattern as evidence that investors are “actively repositioning” portfolios rather than executing broad risk-off strategies.
Andrew Melville, serving as head of research at Block Scholes, suggested that a second rate increase would constitute a “more hawkish surprise than today’s 25bp hike.”
Clarity Act Fails Senate Vote
Prior to the Federal Reserve announcement, Bitcoin had already experienced downward pressure. The cryptocurrency declined more than 3% on Tuesday after the United States Senate voted down the Clarity Act in a narrow 49-50 decision. The proposed legislation sought to establish comprehensive regulatory guidelines for cryptocurrencies and digital assets.
Senator Cynthia Lummis had campaigned vigorously for bipartisan backing, maintaining that the final legislative language addressed Democratic concerns. Despite these efforts, all but one Democratic senator voted in opposition.
CFTC Chairman Michael Selig characterized the vote as “unfortunate” while noting that regulatory agencies maintain the ability to take action utilizing current statutory frameworks.
ETF Capital Movement
According to Wu Blockchain’s reporting, US spot Bitcoin ETFs experienced net redemptions totaling $296 million on September 16. Spot Ether ETFs recorded an additional $224 million in outflows, producing combined redemptions of $520 million. BlackRock’s ETHA product led Ether ETF withdrawals with $110 million in redemptions. Morgan Stanley’s MSBT represented a notable exception, registering $3.47 million in net inflows.
Martin Lee of DWF Labs projected that the hawkish “higher for longer” monetary policy approach would necessitate repricing across risk-oriented asset classes.
