Bill Dubuque’s Crime Drama ‘M.I.A.’ Sets Peacock Premiere Date & Drops First-Look Images

Peacock‘s new crime thriller M.I.A., from creator, writer, and executive producer Bill Dubuque, will be available to binge on May 7.

Season 1 consists of 9 60-minute episodes and stars series regulars Shannon Gisela, Cary Elwes, Danay Garcia, Brittany Adebumola, Dylan Jackson, Alberto Guerra, Maurice Compte, Gerardo Celasco, and Marta Milans.

Running drugs is a family affair for Etta Tiger Jonze (Gisela) in M.I.A. But when the family business is threatened, she is thrust into a life she never expected, forcing her to use her wits to survive as she navigates Miami’s criminal underground.

M.I.A. has the distinction of being one of the few shows set in Miami that was also produced there. Shows like MGM+’s Hotel Cocaine, Netflix’s Griselda, and Showtime’s Dexter have shot in the Dominican Republic and Long Beach, California, as stand-ins for the Magic City, with some using exterior and aerial shots. The reason for this is that the State of Florida has rarely offered incentives like tax credits and high production costs. An issue the production of Dexter ran into was the high cost of hurricane insurance, among other things.

Additional shows set in Miami that filmed there include the OG NBC’s Miami Vice, USA Network’s hit Burn Notice, HBO’s Ballers, and the Starz drama Magic City. The Dexter prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, had actors spend some time in the 305, but they shot primarily in Los Angeles.

Karen Campbell served as the show’s showrunner, writer (102), and executive producer. Althea Jones directed the first two episodes of the series and executive produced. Additional directors and their episodes include: Gwyneth Horder-Payton (103), Marizee Almas (104, 105), Ben Semanoff  (106, 107), and John Dahl (108, 109). MRC is the studio and Paramount Global Content Distribution is the distributor.
