Bel-Air Season 4 Update Is Concerning After Major Season 3 Cliffhanger

The update on Bel-Air season 4 is concerning, considering how season 3 ended on a major cliffhanger. Season 3 of Bel-Air added in several new and old storylines to the Peacock remake, increasing the tension as each character went through a whirlwind of a summer. Showrunner and executive producer Carla Banks Waddles, after Bel-Air's season 3 ending was released by Peacock, mentioned that she was uncertain on if the series would get renewed. The fact that season 4 of Bel-Air is not guaranteed is somewhat disheartening, as so many of its storylines had quite a bit of potential. Bel-Air season 4's lack of guarantee is quite worrying, as season 3's cliffhanger left many characters in flux. In an interview with TVLine, Waddles discussed how, despite the positive audience reaction to season 3 and its finale, the series' season 4 fate is still undecided. Waddles stated that she was proud of the story but that the chances of renewal were "anybody's guess" and even with a strong show, the industry leaves a lot of room for uncertainty when it comes to renewals.

Bel-Air's cast of characters have gone through several major changes in season 3. Will's (Jabari Banks) kidnapping was a major cliffhanger as it is implied that it was due to Geoffrey's (Jimmy Akingbola) past, but Will's was not the only character's fate left unseen. Aunt Viv's (Cassandra Freeman) positive pregnancy test, LaMarcus's (Justin Cornwell) collapse, and Carlton's (Olly Sholotan) romantic journey are all still in flux, which would make ending on season 3 of the Peacock remake a major disappointment for audiences who are eager to see what happens next to the Banks family.

The Season's Themes And Mysteries Need To Be Expanded On

Ending on season 3 of Bel-Air would be a massive disappointment, as not only would it leave the mysteries unsolved, but also cease the show's exploration of various fascinating themes. Bel-Air season 3 sets up how Geoffrey's past has now come back to haunt him through Will, but audiences do not know if he will return to save Will, leaving that relationship arc unfinished. Not only that, but LaMarcus's collapse adds a new wrinkle to his love triangle with Hilary (Coco Jones) and Jazz (Jordan L. Jones), a wrinkle that may not get expanded on if Bel-Air is not renewed.

These unfinished narratives, combined with the reworking of Aunt Viv's pregnancy story from the original series, would not be the only disappointing things to come from ending on season 3. The series' larger themes of identity, privilege, and belonging would also be cut short in their exploration. That would be a shame, as many of the details of the show create new conversations around these classic ideas, taking some of what the original show discussed and expanding it for modern audiences to dive into. Cutting Bel-Air off at season 3 would stall these conversations, leaving more than unfinished stories behind.
