She is one of Hollywood's most insipid stars.
Marked not by her acting prowess but rather by her questionable choice of film roles – her new film Verity has been brutally panned by critics, just the latest in her series of flops - matched only by her questionable taste in men.
Yet, look around, and Dakota Johnson is everywhere – a woman who, if not going through a complete reinvention, seems determined to have her main character moment.
In recent weeks, she's appeared in Taylor Swift's music video for her latest release, Patient Zero. The buzz continued when the pop superstar showed up for a surprise appearance at Johnson's Saturday Night Live hosting gig, bringing Johnson a birthday cake on-stage, in a showy demonstration of their increasingly chummy friendship.
And the 37-year-old actress has, a source tells the Daily Mail, been enjoying an increasingly hot and heavy relationship with new man of the moment, bad boy punk rocker Machine Gun Kelly – real name Colson Baker – best known for his tumultuous relationship with Megan Fox.
'Dakota said recently she wants to settle down and have kids,' the insider said. 'It's way too early for her to talk kids with Colson, but friends say they would not be surprised if Dakota was like, "Oops, I got pregnant." She is spontaneous.'

At first glance it's tempting to wonder if the multi-generational nepo-baby isn't trying just a little too hard to shed the milquetoast image that has dogged her, despite her most notable role thus far being in 50 Shades of Grey.
But as much as he may be a departure from her long-term love, Coldplay's mild-mannered front man, Chris Martin, friends say, Johnson and Kelly may be the real deal.
'At first glance, it would seem like they are very different, but the truth is that Dakota and Colson are very similar in many ways,' the source told the Daily Mail. 'They are light-hearted and love to have fun.'
According to the source, Baker, 36, and Johnson have known each other for years, but got closer after spending time together at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding in New York City in July, where they connected over sharing 'the same quirky sense of humor.'
'They love to laugh and be silly because he is super funny, and she thrives off humor as she is a very quirky and a funny person herself,' the source said. 'She is really into dry humor and making fun of herself and is very self-effacing, and he just eats that up because she doesn't take anything too seriously.'
Of course it doesn't hurt that their bedroom life is red hot, according to insiders.
'She has told friends that they have great sexual chemistry and it's the best sex she has ever had, she calls it "fireworks,"' a source previously told Daily Mail.
'She loves his look and his tattoos, she thinks he is hot as s***.'
When not wrapped up with each other, Baker and Johnson reportedly have been kicking it with newlywed Swift, keeping her company in New York and Los Angeles as Kelce is playing football. The couple has also reportedly been doing karaoke sessions and movie nights for dates.
While the dalliance began as some no-strings-attached summer loving, the source said that the pair are already 'making holiday plans' and that things 'could become more serious' between the two soon.
The source told the Daily Mail: 'Never say never with those two, who knows, it's really a wild ride right now but could become more serious. After all, they were friends before they started dating so they have a strong foundation.'
According to the source, Johnson has been happily hitting the recording studio with Baker, who has encouraged her to pursue music and believes that she could have a career pivot to a singer if she wanted to.

The source said: 'She has a lot to offer. She sings herself and Colson loves it, he is infatuated, he thinks she could be a professional singer if she wanted to be but she doesn't want to be.
'She has said she is inspiring his music. She prides herself on being a muse for musicians, she is totally like that Penny Lane character from Almost Famous, she has a hippie vibe and also knows music very well.'
Though this isn't Johnson's first rodeo when it comes to dating a musician, the source said that the dynamic between Johnson and Baker is decidedly different from when she was partnered with Martin, 49, who was 'a nice guy, but not light-hearted' and who was significantly older than Johnson, which created 'tension.'
'This is a big change for them because Dakota's ex Chris was very serious as he is into politics and charity and getting his "message" out into the world,' the source said, noting that Baker has found a similar levity in Johnson following his past relationship with Fox.
'It is the same for him - Colson's ex Megan was also serious, she was always searching for a deeper meaning in life,' the source said. 'She is really into astrology and past lives, psychic phenomena, spirits. She is super earthy and wants to always grow. That's awesome, but a little heavy.'
The Daily Mail has reached out to Dakota's representatives for comment.
While Johnson's about-turn with Baker and her recent swanning in the spotlight may seem out of character to those who associate her with the lo-fi and often humdrum characters she so often plays on-screen, it's worth remembering that the chaos of celebrity is woven into her DNA as a third-generation nepo baby.
As the daughter of movie stars Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson and the granddaughter of The Birds bombshell Tippi Hedren, Johnson's family was never a stranger to fame - or the scandal and eccentricities that often accompany it.

Hedren infamously loved large exotic cats so much that she kept tigers and lions as pets in the home she lived in with her husband and children.
She and her husband Noel Marshall eventually made Roar, a film about a zoologist, that starred the two of them, as well as Griffith, that left 70 members of the crew injured. Griffith was mauled by a lioness so badly that she needed facial reconstructive surgery with over 50 stitches.
Hollywood lore has also long fixated on Griffith and Don Johnson's unconventional, on-again, off-again relationship. The pair met in 1972, when Don Johnson, then 22, was filming The Harrad Experiment with Hedren and Griffith, who was just 14. Griffith began dating him a year later, when she was 15, and the pair married in 1976 after she turned 18 - a union that ended in divorce just six months later.
About 13 years later, the couple reunited and remarried in 1989, welcoming Dakota later that year before divorcing again in 1994. Griffith then wed actor Antonio Banderas in 1996 and Dakota forged a close bond with her new stepfather.
In an interview with Vogue Germany, Johnson recalled that she spent her childhood 'on set and was always surrounded by people that made movies,' but there were downsides to the fame.
She said: 'There were times when it was really quite scary, and people would aggressively and physically try to get to my mom when we were just going to the supermarket or something.'
Still, Dakota, as Hollywood nepo babies do, fell into the razzle dazzle world of Hollywood. Johnson made her acting debut at age 10, in Banderas' 1999 directorial debut, Crazy in Alabama, which also starred Griffith.

A string of small but forgettable roles eventually led her to sexy thriller Fifty Shades and its sequels, which netted her millions – and into the inner circles of stardom that put her in rooms with the likes of Taylor Swift.
All of which to say – Johnson's normal growing up was anything but – which might offer some explanation of her seeming desire to break free from the conventions that have come to define her.
Whether her path to standing out will come by walking beside Baker remains to be seen, but the insider said that Baker's infatuation is the real deal - and this is a celebrity couple that won't be hiding indoors much.
'I don't have a crystal ball,' the source said. 'But I will tell you that when men fall for Dakota, they fall hard.'
'They love being celebrities. To be honest, they love the fame and all the fun and perks, they never moan about being famous. They don't apologize for loving the good things in life.'
