Carrying on the torch for franchises can be tough, but for Battlestar Galactica fans, it comes naturally. No matter which iteration of the show they're fans of, Battlestar lives on through fan conventions and actor appearances, and many of the cast are still working today.
Simply put, the 2000s show made too big of an impact (as the prior iteration did before it) to completely go away, and it'll always be remembered. As far as a remake or reboot goes, the ball is still in the rights-holders' court. But you can try something right now that puts you in the shoes of a Fleet Commander.
As a total conversion mod, Battlestar Galactica: Fleet Commander is available completely inside Homeworld Remastered, and built from the ground up by fans.
Fleet Commander includes Colonial and Cylon factions, deathmatch and survival modes, and a 13-mission campaign. There are two versions currently available now: 1.3 on Steam, and 1.1, which is available on Epic Games and GoG. All you need is Homeworld Remastered on Steam, and you're good to go for the latest edition. For the others, you'll need to comprise a bit in terms of the build.
To be clear, this is a total conversion mod, down to the aesthetics: "Enhanced levels of fidelity and performance with new graphics using textures up to 8K resolution, unique features, revamped gameplay, complete new artificial intelligence, a brand-new campaign, new units, and more. Feel new levels of visuals and effects with realistic missiles, explosions, and flak effects, with penetration and non-penetration explosions, damages, and wreckages."
Steam is one of the easiest ways to enjoy this total conversion project: subscribe to the mod from the Steam Workshop, and once the launcher loads, select "Mods," choose all three, and launch. That's it.
It also offers a completely new campaign experience: "Get started in Battlestar Galactica: Fleet Commander with a unique campaign following the events of the new series. The fate of the Twelve Colonies hangs in the balance. Embark on a unique journey featuring advanced in-game and out-cutscenes. The Cylons have returned and left the 12 Colonies an irradiated wasteland. Take charge of the Colonial Fleet or the Cylon Forces across skirmish, multiplayer, and recreation of famous moments from the franchise through the narrative campaign."
In case you were looking for an immersive experience, that's what the team is aiming for: "Protect your Battlestar with a responsive and immersive flak system working for both the player and the artificial intelligence, no matter your faction. However, strategy comes first. How you play and engage with your ships will be instrumental in your battles. The cylons have missiles, you don't."
Other than some technical issues in earlier builds of the game (that have since been updated), fans are generally loving the mod, including this Steam Workshop review: "This mod is by far my favorite mod for Homeworld as a whole. Launching a swarm of vipers in the fray of a hectic battle between Basestars and Battlestars is, for me, one of the high points of this mod."
As far as future updates, the mod is considered complete. While fans have been clamoring for more updates over time, the author, IceChuck, notes that Season 4 was the "final update," and the team is "content" with how they left the mod. Still, if you haven't experienced it yet, Battlestar Galactica fans have another reason to jump back into a series that's stood the test of time.
