  • Ripple Effect studio audio director Jeff Wilson has discussed the demand for high-quality game soundtracks

  • He also argued that audiences are interested in well-crafted "boutique experiences"

Ripple Effect studio audio director Jeff Wilson has said that there's "a lot of demand" for high-quality game soundtracks, and argued that players are "interested in boutique experiences."

In a new interview with TechRadar Gaming, Wilson, who has worked on entries in both the Medal of Honor and Battlefield series, explained that "the expectation" for music "has gone up across entertainment in general."

"We're following suit with the rest of the entertainment industries," he added.

He used the rise of streaming services as an analogy, as studios "quickly found out" that "producing a ton of things at a very low budget is not really what people were interested in. They're interested in boutique experiences."

Now, many of the best streaming services differentiate themselves by offering their own award-winning shows, and Wilson says it's "the same for games."

He revealed that there is "a lot more" demand for live music in games, and detailed how EA has "done a great job" building strong relationships with studios in Nashville, Tennessee. This helps produce full orchestral recordings at a lower cost than in more expensive cities like Los Angeles, New York, or London.

The comments come off the back of his team's work being recognized with Battlefield 6 winning the award for best audio design at The Game Awards 2025, which he describes as "an amazing experience."

"You spend a very long time producing the game, and when it finally comes out, you're just hoping people are going to like it," he said.

"Having the launch that we did, the really positive reception that we got, and then the award — it just reinvigorates you. It gives you energy to keep pushing forward. It just inspires us, in our live service for Battlefield 6, to keep the quality bar super high."
