In Gotham City and abroad, Batman's never been short on shadowy, secretive organizations either pulling the strings of society or enforcing rigid notions of order by any means necessary. In the case of the latter, the League of Assassins as founded by Ra'z al Ghul was a pretty consistent presence amid Batman's rogues gallery, while also featuring nicely in varying roles opposite Batman's allies and elsewhere in DC's various continuities. But starting in 2017, following the initial renaming such as in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy with Batman Begins, the League of Shadows was properly integrated as a splinter faction in Detective Comics #952.

The League of Shadows held an almost mythical presence over the heads of even hardened killers of the main League of Assassins, believed to be a myth to scare al Ghul's followers into submission. But while the Assassins dealt with politics, money, and power, the Shadows existed to go one step further, purging the corruption completely and dealing with even the most dangerous elites. Its leadership has featured the likes of Lady Shiva and Nyssa Raatko, and in the case of the Absolute Universe, the former built them out of the ashes of the League of Assassins. Now, the Absolute Universe has seemingly decided who is the strongest member of the League of Shadows in one positively killer issue.

DC's League Of Shadows Definitively Decides Its Strongest Member

Absolute Cassandra Cain

The League of Shadows in DC's Absolute Universe wasn't a sleeper group within the greater League of Assassins or secret enforcers coexisting with their predecessors. In this case, their existence only came about after the extinction-level event that came after Jack Grimm, the Joker, joined the League of Assassins, and upon being told "no" after demanding the group be made his, the Joker massacres all but seven of their members. Shiva's remaining cohort was thus scattered, with the former leader taking her daughter, Cassandra Cain, on the journey to assemble a new group out of the survivors, with Shiva delivering a ferocious response to anyone resisting her.

My hand, strong yet merciful. And together...we are the League of Shadows.

-Absolute Cassandra Cain

While this aggressive leadership was geared more toward sending a message to those wishing to stay in hiding rather than rebuild, Shiva's wrath would soon be turned onto Cassandra after her daughter went to rescue Katana, who was captured and deemed a lost cause. The two soon fight, putting Cassandra's seven years of rigorous, endless training under her mother to the test. Cassandra demonstrates her perfectly-honed senses by putting on her blindfold and utterly dominating Shiva in close combat, after already showing up even the battle-hardened Katana at Ark D. This latest victory pretty firmly cements Cassandra as the strongest member of the League of Shadows.

But upon defeating Shiva, Cassandra and her mother finally have their heart-to-heart, transforming the broken League of Assassins into something they can both wholly call their own.

Absolute Catwoman's Current Arc Tests The League Of Shadows' Sympathetic Status

Surviving a massacre left Shiva severely scarred, but the League of Shadows has yet to fully prove whether it can rise from the ashes as a more virtuous organization than its origins may suggest. Now with Cassandra Cain and the League on a collision course with Absolute Catwoman, who attempts to seize the artificial intelligence known as the Yarn, it's the clash of the underdog and the traumatized killers as Absolute Catwoman #4 approaches on October 14, 2026.

ADark Crisis BInfinite Frontier CDarkseid’s rewriting of the DC Multiverse in the current continuity DFlashpoint Beyond

It's understandable to remain conflicted on who to root for after Absolute Cassandra Cain, even if the League of Shadows is still fundamentally an antagonistic presence until proven otherwise, with or without Cassandra. It's also entirely believable that Cassandra still has a place outside of her organization should the Absolute Universe even after this plot, but for now, the best place to follow her journey in the coming months is in the pages of Absolute Catwoman as DC's dark rebooted universe builds out ever further.
