And the Joker will be there too

One would have thought that Bruce Timm said everything he could have said about Batman back in the 1990s. With Batman: The Animated Series, Timm developed definitive takes on the Dark Knight, several of his sidekicks, and the vast majority of his major villains. And by placing them in a film noir setting with an Art Deco aesthetic, it gave his version of Batman a timelessness which still endures today. Decades later, many still consider it to be the greatest take on Batman in any medium.
Yet in 2024, Timm returned with Batman: Caped Crusader, a new continuity which bears some resemblance to Batman: The Animated Series, but with some bold reinventions of the characters.
What is Batman: Caped Crusader?
While Batman: The Animated Series had a look inspired by the 1940s, Batman: Caped Crusader is firmly planted in that decade, with period-appropriate cars and technology. Even Batman (Hamish Linklater) himself features design elements from the character’s earliest appearances, with bigger ears and smaller gloves. At first glance, you might even mistake Caped Crusader for the 1990s series, as it also employs Timm’s signature angular style and simple linework. But the new series also made some major changes, like a female version of the Penguin (Minnie Driver) and a far more sinister take on Harley Quinn (Jamie Chung), who is unrelated to the Joker.
There are other changes as well. Commissioner Jim Gordon (Eric Morgan Stuart) and his daughter Barbara (Krystal Joy Brown), who is a Gotham public defender, are depicted as Black, while Harley Quinn and Renee Montoya (Michelle C. Bonilla) are briefly romantic partners. Detective Harvey Bullock (John DiMaggio) is also a corrupt cop in this version, as opposed to the more rule-bendingcop he was inBatman: The Animated Series. Perhaps most strikingly, Bruce Wayne’s relationship with Alfred (Jason Watkins) seems far more formal than most other depictions, with Bruce simply referring to him as “Pennyworth.” Unsurprisingly, some of these changes rankled the fanbase, but for those who stuck around, they got an interesting ride. While the series is primarily episodic, with one villain per episode, there are several longer story arcs that pay off near the end of the first season.

What happened in Batman: The Caped Crusader season 1?
Batman: Caped Crusader depicts a younger Batman who is just starting out as a crime fighter. When the series begins, he’s still at the point where most citizens of Gotham don’t even believe he exists. He’s also not yet aligned with the Gordons. Both Jim and Barbara separately begin to realize that Batman isn’t what’s wrong with Gotham at all. Meanwhile, Gordon is dealing with a deeply corrupt police force. His biggest problems seem to be high-ranking Detectives Bullock and Flass (Gary Anthony Williams).
The season also plays the long game with Harvey Dent (Diedrich Bader). He’s initially presented as a cocky district attorney running for mayor of Gotham, but when he slips behind in the polls, he decides to accept a large donation from crime boss Rupert Thorne (Cedric Yarbrough). Later, Dent refuses to drop the charges against a Thorne associate. Thorne then gets revenge by having one of his goons toss acid in Dent’s face, turning him into Two-Face. Dent then leaves his job, ends his mayoral campaign, and goes on a killer rampage against Thorne’s organization, which lands him in Arkham Asylum.

Those two throughlines converge in the season finale, when Bullock and Flass, on orders from Thorne, abduct Dent with plans to kill him before he can testify in court against Thorne. The Gordons and Batman rescue Dent and confront Thorne’s thugs, including Bullock and Flass. During the conflict, Flass shoots at Barbara Gordon, but Dent sacrifices himself to save her.
What is the Batman: Caped Crusader season 2 story?
In the final moments of the first season finale, Batman softens towards Alfred, finally calling him by his first name. Batman also throws a batarang through Thorne’s window, making clear that he’s coming for him. Finally, we see a brief glimpse of the Joker for the very first time in the series as the villain is perfecting a serum for his laughing toxin.
In the trailer for season 2, we’ve already seen that the show will be picking up on the Joker plotline, as well as exploring the Riddler, Mad Hatter, and several other yet-to-be-introduced villains.
How to watch Batman: Caped Crusader season 2?
On July 31, Prime Video will release all 10 episodes of Batman: Caped Crusader season 2. While the series may not be as good or as traditional as Batman: The Animated Series, it’s still a bold, interesting take on the Caped Crusader that feels refreshingly unique yet familiar all the same.
