DC has just unveiled what may go down as Cassandra Cain's most disturbing, yet undeniably epic, Batgirl redesign of all time. This transformation goes far beyond a simple costume change, venturing into full-blown body horror territory ahead of DC's next crossover crisis event.
Following the wrap-up of San Diego Comic-Con, DC Comics has finally released its October solicitations, giving fans a glimpse of what they can expect from their favorite characters this fall. Among the biggest teases is the solicitation for writer Tate Brombal and artist Takeshi Miyazawa's Batgirl #24, which further confirms that Cassandra Cain will play a major role in the upcoming crossover crisis event, Batman: Bad Seeds.
The crisis event is expected to run for 10 weeks, spanning late August through October 2026, with the story officially kicking off on August 26, 2026, in a prelude featured in Poison Ivy #47 and Batman: Bad Seeds – Sunset #1. While the event will unfold over 10 weeks for readers, within the DC Universe the entire story takes place over one catastrophic night in Gotham City.
DC Comics confirms that the general premise of the event revolves around "Poison Ivy unleashing a desperate act of eco-terror that transforms Gotham into a hostile landscape of prehistoric plant life." On the Batgirl side of things, Cass, like many of Gotham's heroes, will be fighting to protect the city's residents. However, the official synopsis for Batgirl #24 suggests that won't be an easy task, while a variant cover teases one possible consequence the heroine may face; one steeped in body horror.

Whether or not KyuYong Eom's Bad Seeds variant cover for Batgirl #24 reflects the story's in-narrative events, it is perhaps one of the most eye-catching and gorgeously disturbing depictions of Cassandra Cain to date, and for that alone it deserves recognition. Eom's cover reimagines Cass as a mutated human-plant-bat hybrid, resulting in a design that is as mesmerizing as it is horrifying.
Depicted in the nude, Batgirl is curled in on herself, putting her tree branch-like, membrane bat wings on full display as they sprout from her back. With a sickly pale complexion and plant spines and vines erupting across her body, this redesign is pure nightmare fuel. The most unsettling aspect, however, is Cass's head, which is split open at the top, revealing a grotesque maw overflowing with a tongue, razor-sharp teeth, and writhing plant life.
Cass is barely recognizable here. In fact, some could even argue that this isn't Cassandra Cain at all, but rather a monster, if not for one defining feature. Upon closer inspection, the stitching around the creature's mouth matches Cassandra's signature Batgirl design, confirming that this horrifying creature is, in fact, Cass.
Yet while the design is grotesque, Eom manages to convey tragedy more than terror through their art. That quiet tragedy is primarily expressed through Cass's pose, as she curls in on herself instead of contributing to the chaos consuming Gotham. It makes for a truly exceptional piece of artwork, while also suggesting that Batgirl, despite her horrifying physical transformation, may still retain her mind.
Given that this is a variant cover specifically tied to the Bad Seeds event, the implication is that Cassandra's monstrous transformation was likely caused by the spores of Poison Ivy's prehistoric plants. While this mutation may never occur within the pages of the comic itself, there is certainly a plausible narrative explanation for how something like this could happen. Yet, even if it doesn't, Eom's Batgirl artwork perfectly embodies the saying that a picture is worth a thousand words, as an entire story can be gleaned from this single, magnificent cover.
