DC Comics recently launched their latest comic book initiative dubbed the Absolute Universe, a more intense, brutal, and, most importantly, continuity-free reality where Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and the rest of the Justice League have been given fresh starts and radically reimagined origins. Still a fledgling universe on the page, new concept art shows what Cassandra Cain’s version of Batgirl could and should look like when she makes her inevitable (and official) Absolute Universe debut!

A piece of fan-made concept art recently shared to Instagram by Norikjan (@anakoly1), this artist has been cranking out project after project featuring some of the best and most well-known characters from across the comic book spectrum, with Norikjan’s latest uploads being some of their best.

Norikjan has previously drawn Marvel’s Fantastic Four, both Spider-Men in Peter Parker and Miles Morales, Silk, Magik, Doctor Doom, multiple Autobots and Decepticons from Transformers fame, and even a lightly armored redesign of Stephanie Brown’s short-lived version of Robin, to name a few, turning each image into a showcase for Norikjan’s unique art style.

Kick-starting a brand-new canon parallel to DC Comics's main continuity, the Absolute Universe came about after the recent death of Darkseid in DC All In Special, a cosmic-level event that ripped a hole through dimensions and created a reality that has reshaped the company’s most popular heroes and villains. Introducing a hulking brute of a Batman, a Wonder Woman who was quite literally raised in Hell, and a new version of Superman who has yet to make his official debut, it’s only a matter of time before Batman gets a sidekick with Norikjan’s Batgirl being a great first choice.

Absolute Batman Creator Scott Snyder Teases The Inspiration For The Hero's Shocking New Version of A 'Batmobile'

On social media, author Scott Snyder revealed the inspiration for the wicked new Batmobile design in DC's astounding "Absolute Batman" reboot.

Taking cues from Cassandra Cain’s Batgirl if her expertly poised fighting stance, fully-covered mouth, and sewn-together costume are of any indication, Norikjan gives Cass a less restrictive outfit, with her black shorts, utility belt, hand and wrist wraps, tank top (with what looks like a tattooed bat logo on her exposed shoulder), pointed costume accents, subtle cape and chest emblem, and battle-worn cowl all working to bring Cass into the Absolute Universe effectively. Giving fans a black and gold design next, Norikjan shows the potential of an Absolute Batgirl becoming the next member in Absolute Batman’s ever-expanding war on crime.

It remains to be seen if any of the Batgirls — Cassandra Cain, Barbara Gordon, Stephanie Brown, or otherwise — will make an appearance in the Absolute Universe anytime soon, but considering that the entire point of this new line is to upend what came before and introduce old and new characters alike in totally revamped ways, it’s highly likely that some version of Batgirl will eventually make her presence known, with her secret identity and official costume still a big question mark. Regardless of when Batgirl debuts, the Absolute Universe is finally in full swing, and it’s well worth the wait.
