Author and co-creator Michael Connelly reveals when fans can expect Ballard season 2 to be released on Prime Video.

During the same interview, Connelly added that when it comes to the adaptations of his novels, he doesn't mind it when the shows run out of source material and start charting their own path beyond what he created on the page.

For Ballard, there are six books featuring Renee Ballard, including The Late Show, Dark Sacred Night, The Night Fire, The Dark Hours, Desert Star and The Waiting. However, only two of them are focused on the character working cold cases, which is what the show is about; the other four novels focus on her time working the nightbeat in Hollywood.

"They're out [of material] already after the season they're filming right now," Connelly explained.

Once Ballard season 2 is released, the producers and writers will be in uncharted territory in terms of creating new storylines for Renee Ballard if the Prime Video series is renewed for a third season.
