Baldur's Gate 3 PS5 Mod Causes Crashing, Locking You Out Of Playing The Game Entirely

Baldur's Gate 3 players who downloaded the Evelyn's Sweetheat shotgun mod on PlayStation 5 are reporting the game crashing and are unable to reinstall the game due to the mod. Players have taken to social media to warn others not to download the shotgun mod on a console, but it's too late for many. Baldur's Gate 3 developer Larian Studios has been made aware of the issue, telling players the mod did not pass their curation testing and shouldn't have gone live.

Redditor BladeC96 took to the Baldur's Gate 3 subreddit, sounding the alarm for PS5 players to stay away from the shotgun mod. At the time of this writing, the shotgun mod has had 14,134 downloads since it went live on October 19th via mod.io and was just recently ported to consoles. With the announcement that Baldur's Gate 3 is set to be optimized for the PS5 Pro, Larian Studios was quick to get on the issue. Here's what Baldur's Gate 3 community moderator SaloAtLarian had to say:

"The team has re-checked this mod and unfortunately it does not pass our curation testing due to adding shaders, and should not have gone live. We removed the mod from console and Mac earlier today, as the files are not supported on the platforms. Apologies for the inconvenience and confusion!"

Mods are a fun way to make the experience of another playthrough fresh, but not every mod for Baldur's Gate 3 has been a success, and the shotgun mod is no exception. Players on the initial warning thread expressed their frustration with the shotgun mod and, in some cases, were unable to get past the loading screen with the mod in place. Of course, sometimes the best thing to do in a frustrating situation is crack a joke, like Redditor SpiritsJustAHybird who said, "Baldur's gate knows you disrupted the timeline and the DM won't allow the guns lol."

While PS5 players have experienced the most issues with the shotgun mod, Xbox players have also reported their game crashing and other critical errors. However, so far, Xbox players can still play other campaigns in the game as long as the shotgun mod is not active, according to BladeC96. PS5 players are no strangers to new updates and mods causing major issues with their games; for instance, users had to hold off on downloading a recent patch for Star Wars: Outlaws, whereas other console players didn't have an issue.

In most cases, mods are built by fans for fans, and it's the fans who can find solutions to issues with mods. Larian Studios instituted a review process of community mods to ensure that they wouldn't break the game for players, but in this case, the shotgun mod fell through the cracks. Still, it's hard to be frustrated with Larian, as Baldur's Gate 3 has been an unprecedented success for an independent studio.

SaloAtLarian explained that mods on consoles that mess with shaders are usually not supported on platforms outside of PC. At the time of writing, players have been informed to uninstall the mod and contact Larian if they have any further issues with this mod affecting Baulder's Gate 3.
