Backstreet Boys Nominate Themselves for 2027 Super Bowl Halftime Show

The Backstreet Boys are manifesting their one musical desire.

As the boy band continue their Into The Millennium residency in Las Vegas, they’re proposing to bring their nostalgic setlist—and coordinating outfits—on another important stage: the 2027 Super Bowl.

“What do you guys think? Backstreet Boys: 2027 Super Bowl Halftime,” AJ Mclean asked the crowd during their show at the Las Vegas sphere on Feb. 11, per a fan video from @jpasc24. “Let’s make it happen! I mean, why not? It’s in Los Angeles, it’s right down the street.”

While the “Shape of My Heart” singers—also consisting of Kevin Richardson, Howie Dorough, Nick Carter and Brian Littrell—are eager to perform a medley at next year’s big game, they weren’t always open to the idea. In fact, Nick previously revealed the band declined to headline the 2001 Super Bowl and sang the national anthem instead.

“At the time, we loved the Whitney Houston rendition of the national anthem. And for us, we got the choice and we passed on the halftime,” the 46-year-old told Entertainment Tonight in 2021. “But it was a memorable experience for everyone, and I like to say we did a really good job at the national anthem.”

He also praised fellow boy band *NSYNC—who starred in that year's halftime show alongside Aerosmith, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige and Nelly—for doing “a great job” during their set, noting he’d love to share the stage with them in the future.

“That again is going back to the era we came from, the late ‘90s,” Nick explained. “It was a really beautiful time and I think everybody wants that again. They want that feeling coming out of this, everything that we have gone through together and society for the past year and a half.”

He continued, “We want to be a part of that story, of love and growth and just coming out of the dark. I think that's why this event is so special to us.”

Indeed, the Backstreet Boys are putting in their votes to be a part of halftime history—and they’re not being subtle about it.

To increase awareness, the band appeared in two commercials during the 2026 Super Bowl on Feb. 8:  a T-Mobile ad, where they sold customers a new phone plan with their iconic song, “I Want It That Way,” plus a karaoke session of “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back) for Coinbase.

As for how they feel teaming up with *NSYNC for a double dose of nostalgia on tour? It seems they’re still open to the idea.

“They haven’t done something in over 22 years," AJ said of *NSYNC’s tour schedule to E! News last February. “We’re gonna keep doing what we do. No one knows what the future holds. We'll see what happens.”
