Earlier this year, the Russo brothers announced that Avengers: Endgame would be re-released into theaters with a teensy bit of new footage. The additions, we were told, would help bridge the gap between Endgame and this December’s Avengers: Doomsday, but no more details were revealed. At least some of the new bits and pieces have, however, now leaked online, in some rather poor footage filmed at a live screening of the movie.
The new version of Endgame is supposed to be in cinemas from September 25, but some at preview screenings have sneakily filmed the big screen and these clips are finding their way to Reddit. And while they’re not exactly extensive, it does make for some interesting musing. If you don’t want to know before you re-watch the movie, then abandon ship. Spoilers from here on.

© KotakuThere are three clips circulating. In the first, things begin with the former Endgame moment where Steve Rogers returns to the past to reunite with the love of his life, Peggy Carter. But the scene now continues on from their kiss, the pair distracted by a sound. Cap hides, and Peggy opens the front door, whereupon Loki walks in. [Crowd cheers] Cap steps out, and they all exchange forlorn glances, before it then cuts to credits.
In the next section, seen via the movie’s earlier release in Korea, we see Loki’s TVA pals investigating some sort of overlap between Earth-10005 (the old X-Men universe that’s due to turn up in Doomsday) and a new location, Earth-1127. This explains that footage we saw of Xavier staring up at fire raining down from the skies. (There’s no mention of Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Earth-828, which is surprising given that’s where Doom seems to be.) Miss Minutes appears to tell people to stay put, but then we see Mobius, Ouroboros et al reacting to the incident, saying the two Earths are about to collide, and an animation of missiles being fired between the two. Then more and more reports pour in, thousands of incursions taking place at once, as the multiverse begins to collapse.

It was reported a couple of days ago that different screenings will have different lengths, implying different amounts of new footage, which is just ridiculous. So it’s not clear if all the footage appears at all the screenings. However, as slight as the Captain America scene may appear, it does lean in to some interesting conspiracies.
We know Captain America is in Doomsday, because he’s in the trailer a bunch. And we think we definitely know it’s the real him because he holds Mjölnir, with his character previously established as the only person worthy to do so other than Thor. Except, Loki showing up in the past directly plays into a theory that’s been circulating since the Doomsday trailer first appeared: What if it’s not Steve Rogers, but Loki in disguise?
Obviously, previously in the MCU Loki was never deemed worthy to carry Mjölnir, despite being Thor’s brother and a god in his own rights. But Loki’s changed a lot, going through a redemption arc in the two seasons of the Loki Disney Plus show that saw him eventually sacrificing all to hold the timelines together himself. He’s pretty darned worthy now (even if it did make Loki such a disappointment, seeing the trickster god become yet another goodie-two-shoes). This footage really does seem to be playing directly into that conspiracy.
There’s not long to wait to find out now, with Doomsday due in theaters December 18. And, I guess, you could see Endgame all over again for the sake of two minutes of new footage.
