Avatar: The Last Airbender is officially returning in 2026, and it looks better than ever. Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 has already delivered some bending adventures this year, but even more are set to come. The animated version of the show ended in 2008, with only its sequel, The Legend of Korra, whetting appetites for more between 2012 and 2014. Naturally, this has left many wanting more from the show that caused such a cultural impact in the mid-to-late 2000s, and 2026 is offering exactly that.
Originally titled The Last Airbender: The Legend of Aang, a new movie is being released set in the universe in July 2026. The first trailer for Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender was released earlier that month, offering a first look at animated Avatar almost two decades after the original show ended. With a new Last Airbender cast and story, the film is offering exactly what Avatar fans have wanted for a while, and it looks even better than expected.
Yes, the trailer is fantastic for anyone who is a fan of the original show, but the response to it online has been even more promising. In just over a week, the trailer has accrued more than 11 million views on YouTube, which is more than both trailers for Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 combined. This clearly indicates that audiences are still wanting more from the animated side of the franchise, and that the future looks bright for the relatively new Avatar Studios.
While it may be true that the unfortunate Last Airbender leaks caused more discourse and, thus, more views on the trailer, it is still evident that nothing can quite eclipse the excitement of a new animated story in the franchise from its original creators. Hopefully, the movie's release on July 22, 2026, can reflect the excitement that its first trailer has caused, setting up Avatar: The Last Airbender for a very exciting future.
Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender Can Send A Message For The Franchise's Future
Aside from the frustrating leaks that were beyond anyone's control, the biggest blunder Paramount has made concerning Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender was removing it from its theatrical slate. Initially, the film was set to be released in theaters in the latter months of 2026. Sadly, though, Paramount decided to make the movie a Paramount+ original, which was utterly disappointing to those who wanted to see The Last Airbender in its original animated glory on the big screen.
However, if the success of the trailer does indeed manifest into views on Paramount+, Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender can send a big message to Paramount ahead of more Avatar Studios projects. Audiences could prove that removing the movie from a theatrical release was a mistake, as it would have been highly successful. If so, this could push Paramount into making a different decision going forward. If, or, more aptly, when, more movies from Avatar Studios are released, the seeming success of Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender could lead to theatrical releases in the franchise's future.
What's Next For The Last Airbender Franchise?
With all of this in mind, it is worth exploring what is next for The Last Airbender franchise after the Avatar Aang movie. Of course, there is season 3 of Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender. This was produced back-to-back with season 2, meaning it will likely be released in 2027 as a conclusion to the live-action version of the story. Concerning Avatar Studios, though, there is one more exciting project in the works after Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender.
Avatar: Seven Havens is set for release in 2027 and is the sequel to The Legend of Korra. It will tell the story of Pavi, the next Avatar after Korra, but, in this dangerous future, the Avatar is seen as humanity's destroyer, not savior. The series is set to last two seasons, each containing 13 episodes. If that, and Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, is as successful as the latter's trailer seems to hint at, there will undoubtedly be more Avatar Studios projects greenlit.
