Atletico Madrid sealed a deadline-day deal to bring Canadian international Jonathan David to the Spanish capital on a season-long loan from Juventus, with a non-obligatory purchase option set at €25 million. The move, finalized on September 1, 2026, makes David the first Canadian player in Atletico’s history.
David has already passed his medical and been handed the number 15 shirt.
Why Atletico needed David now
Diego Simeone’s squad has been dealing with forward-line turbulence heading into the meat of the La Liga season. Alexander Sorloth has been sidelined with injury, and questions have swirled around the future availability of Julián Álvarez, leaving Atletico thin in the one position where depth matters most.
The financial structure of the deal also tells a story. Juventus is covering a significant chunk of David’s salary, estimated at around €11 million gross per year. That kind of subsidy turns an already appealing loan into something close to a bargain for Atletico, who get a proven goalscorer without bearing the full cost of his wages or committing to a permanent transfer.
The €25 million buy option being non-obligatory gives Atletico the luxury of a full season to evaluate David before deciding whether to make the arrangement permanent.
From Lille sensation to Juventus enigma
David’s career arc has been fascinating to track. At Lille, he was nothing short of prolific: 109 goals and 31 assists across 232 appearances between 2020 and 2025.
His move to Juventus was supposed to be the next logical step. During his debut season in Serie A in 2025-26, David managed between 6 and 8 goals in approximately 46 appearances.
On the international stage, David has been even more impressive. He stands as Canada’s all-time leading goalscorer with 42 goals for the national team. He punctuated that status by netting three times at the 2026 World Cup.
