The Assassin's Creed franchise just got an absolutely massive update from Ubisoft with the confirmation of several upcoming projects, but one update is going relatively under the radar despite being one of the most tangible announcements yet. Headed by the return of Jean Guesdon as the Head of Content for the franchise, AC is starting its exciting new phase with a free download for one of the franchise's most iconic entries, Assassin's Creed Unity.

Even if the free update for Assassin's Creed Unity might not be as exciting as a major AC remake announcement, it's still a fantastic reason to revisit one of the best entries in the series, which has received several major overhauls since it's rocky all the way back in 2014.

Eventually overcoming its infamously rough release, AC Unity has gone on to receive plenty of acclaim from fans for its excellent parkour mechanics, gorgeous world, and innovative multiplayer implementation. Even during the worst of its issues, exploring the densely populated streets of 19th-century Paris through Unity's seamless movements was incredibly unique, and one that will look even more stunning with a 60fps boost.

Even if you're hesitant to jump right into an older entry without as much of an active community anymore, Xbox users can still try it out for free during the 4-day Xbox Free Play Days window. Although Ubisoft hasn't announced which other entries will receive limited-time trials alongside Unity just yet, the classic AC experience has more than enough content to keep you and even some friends busy for a good while.

While there's no doubt that Assassin's Creed Unity holds up incredibly well over a decade later, it's still impossible to overlook all the other exciting announcements that Ubisoft's Jean Guesdon had to offer. On top of discussing the final phase of support and updates for Assassin's Creed Shadows following its 1-year anniversary, we also got a few more surprising updates in store.

Ubisoft's brand update also included an update for Codename INVICTUS, the upcoming PvP-focused entry created by the team behind For Honor, and confirmations that both Assassin's Creed Jade and the upcoming Netflix show are still well, alongside plans to introduce co-op back into the series after its absence since Assassin's Creed Unity.

While we already knew about the existence of the Black Flag remake and Assassin's Creed Codename HEXE, a leak just a day before the announcement suggests Ezio will return to the series once more in the mobile spinoff. Although it wasn't included in the official announcement, it's clear that Assassin's Creed still has more than a few surprises in store, even with their move towards transparency.
