Users of some of the most popular social media apps reported widespread issues Friday morning. The problems included Facebook, Instagram and Facebook Messenger, all of which are owned by Meta.
Downdetector showed more than 80,000 reports of issues with Facebook around 10:15 a.m. ET Friday. (Downdetector and CNET are both owned by the same parent company, Ziff Davis.) Other high rates of errors showed with different Meta services, namely Instagram and Facebook Messenger.
By about 11 a.m., the platforms seemed to be operating close to normal, letting users log in even if some features still had glitches.
CNET has reached out to Meta for details.

Facebook is back. For some of us, at least. We're also seeing that Facebook's Stories feature and Messenger are working. NordVPN also updated its outage page to say that Facebook is now experiencing a partial outage. NordVPN's 11 a.m. ET report also shows a drastic dip in outage reports (702 users).

Down for Everyone or Just Me, another outage website, displayed a banner reporting Instagram's outage.
"Yes, we are detecting problems with Instagram that began 1 hour ago," the website says. As of the website's 10 a.m. EST tracking 10,183 users reported that Instagram was down. Some report receiving an error while others say Instagram is inaccessible or experiencing login or speed issues. You can report your Instagram outage on this page.

After struggling this morning, Downdetector's Facebook status page is back up and working well. And it shows that error reports quickly dropped from a peak of more than 132,000 at 9:50 a.m. ET to around 10,000 at 10:35 a.m. Facebook Messenger showed a similar pattern, peaking at more than 16,000.
While some commenters reported being able to log back in, some said they were still unable to or that their access was limited.
The Instagram reports peaked around 9,500 at 9:54 a.m. and dropped after that, but they are back up to 8,170 as of 10:39 a.m.
WhatsApp showed a spike in problems, but that number was much lower -- less than 200 at the 9:55 a.m. peak.

Facebook stories displays an error message on the mobile app.
Screenshot by Dashia Milden/CNETFacebook seems to be working fine on desktop for me, but my mobile app is definitely lagging. I opened the app to find a new message where my stories usually display. The mesage asks me to try again, but doesn't refresh when I do. Here's what you might see on your app.
Outage numbers reported to NordVPN remain high as of 10:30 a.m. ET.
Here's what I'm seeing

This is what happens when I try to log into Facebook.
Screenshot by Jon Reed/CNETI'm apparently able to access Instagram, but trying to log into Facebook in the browser on my phone gave me an endless loading screen.
I've also been able to see messages in Messenger, although they've been slow to load.
We've seen a massive, sudden spike in outage reports across the platforms where users can say they're experiencing issues. The traffic seems to be causing issues even for those sites.
