Warning: This article contains spoilers for Chicago Med season 11, episode 21, "Heaven Help Us."Chicago Med doesn't always deliver a happy finale ending, and that was definitely true for some characters in the last episode of season 11. Goodwin faced being ousted from her position, Lenox came to terms with her diagnosis, and Frost lost his dad. For a happy ending, however, look no further than Dean Archer and Hannah Asher.
Despite Chicago Med season 11's penultimate episode featuring Hannah in imminent danger from a gunman and her early labor, previews for the finale revealed Archer being held at gunpoint. Still, Archer and Hannah got the most optimistic ending of any Med characters, and that's not even just because their daughter was perfectly healthy at birth.
Archer finally chose his moment to confess his love for Hannah, and he went all-in after Hannah prompted him to say what was on his mind. Whether or not Chicago Med has done enough to really sell their love story from the start, his dramatic speech was about as romantic as One Chicago can get. That's largely due to his decision to focus on what has always worked between them, going back to when Archer begrudgingly accepted Hannah's return to the ED in season 7. They had a rocky road to get to the point of sharing a kiss in their final scene before Chicago Med season 12.
It remains to be seen how the medical drama will continue their relationship, since a dramatic confession doesn't erase the very real issues between them in season 11. Still, there's plenty to ponder as the summer hiatus starts.
Archer's Confession Is True To His Friendship With Hannah
NBCWhether you count yourself as a "Dasher" shipper or not, Chicago Med season 11 was pretty topsy-turvy when it came to Archer and Hannah's relationship. He even got (and lost) a girlfriend during the course of her pregnancy, and Chicago Med didn't revisit Hannah's dad's claim that Archer was in love with her for quite a while. But it could be easy to remain a fan of them as a duo because of the strong basis of friendship between them, which was one of the most surprising twists that Med could have delivered after how antagonistic he was when she arrived as the ED's full-time OB.
Even the reveal that they'd slept together off-screen to explain how Archer was the father only tracked because she'd paid him a friendly visit one night. The Crunch Berries were a very fun metaphor going back to season 10. In fact, if the Crunch Berries hadn't gotten a shout-out in Dean's speech, I might have cried foul. Here's what he said:
I love you, Hannah. And I have for a long time. Before our girl, before the Crunch Berries, long before. And I wish I could pinpoint a moment, but if I'm honest, it wasn't just one moment. It was thousands of moments, which revealed to me what I feel for you. What I've always felt.
Honestly, if not for the romantic delivery of the speech, Archer's words could have almost come across as a platonic declaration of friendship. That's not a bad thing, given the circumstances. Jessy Schram's performance showed Hannah looking taken aback, shedding a tear, smiling, and altogether very tired to be having this conversation.
It might not have worked if Hannah had responded any other way than to say, "Thank you for telling me," and not dropping an "I love you too" on him after the kiss. At their core, they're friends, and they'll be just fine without talking everything out while Hannah was still in her hospital bed.
What's Next For Archer & Hannah In Chicago Med Season 12
NBCIf Chicago Med picks back up after a few months in-universe as usual, the timing could be right for Hannah's return from maternity leave. Starting her season 12 story that way would allow viewers to watch her every stage of becoming a working mom, as well as Archer as a dad getting a second shot after his mistakes with Sean. It would also be a shame if Luigi Sottile doesn't make another guest appearance as Sean Archer. He only had a few moments to react to the news that his dad was having a baby with his former crush in season 11.
The finale technically didn't end with confirmation that they'd be starting a romantic relationship. They have an awful lot on their plates as new parents, not least because Hannah still has to physically recover. It should be interesting to see if they're suddenly on the same page about everything at the hospital, or workplace friction will still be an occasional problem.
It's worth noting that the season 11 finale ended on a cliffhanger that needed an immediate response, with Goodwin staring down a one-hour deadline before coming up with a way to save her job. Chicago Med season 12 picking up exactly where season 11 left off feels unlikely based on previous finales and premieres, but stranger things have happened.
Who would have guessed at this time last year that Hannah and Archer would be swooning over their baby girl, named Mabel? Even they didn't see the twist coming after bonding over Crunch Berries, so season 12 should be a chance for them to adapt to the stress of an ED (and each other) with an infant at home. For now, as the wait begins for season 12 in the fall, fans can always revisit earlier episodes of Chicago Med streaming on Peacock.
