Apple TV is truly earning its reputation as one of the best platforms for sci-fi, but one of its best remains an underrated masterpiece. With shows like Severance and Pluribus taking the world by storm and becoming viral sensations, Apple TV may not be the biggest streamer, but it's delivering consistent quality unlike anyone else.
In addition to Apple TV's most popular shows, the platform has also thrown itself into the sci-fi genre with a handful of other shows that are developing cult followings, especially when it comes to adapting sci-fi and fantasy novels. From Foundation, to See, and the upcoming Necromancer series, Apple TV is pulling far ahead in the sci-fi genre.
For All Mankind Takes Alternate History To The Next Level
However, there remains one spectacular sci-fi series that deserves a lot more attention: For All Mankind. For All Mankind began streaming back in 2019, and is preparing to release its fifth season in 2026, with the show already greenlit for a season 6, which shows the confidence that Apple TV has in the series.
The show follows an alternate timeline where the Soviet Union won the space race in 1969 and landed an astronaut on the moon before the USA. While this is where the show starts, it expands on that to an extraordinary degree, with every new season exploring the ways this impacts the world at large.
How For All Mankind Makes The Most Of Its Premise
For All Mankind delivers a 'what if' concept at its core, but the ripple effect is what makes the series so fascinating. Having lost the race to the moon, the American Space Program steps up its game considerably in an effort to exceed and overtake its rivals, leading to the rapid development of advanced technologies and incredible scientific discoveries.
On top of that, every season of the show explores a new decade following that initial defining moment in 1969, allowing the show to explore how these changes expand over time, and the increasingly wide margin that the world of the show takes from reality as the alternate history takes it further away on its own course.
For All Mankind Is Getting A New Series
Following on from that premise, For All Mankind season 5, which is due to begin streaming in March 2026, will begin exploring events around 2012. As the gap closes between the show's timeline and the present day, it's hard to imagine where it will go next, but the rich and expansive storytelling of the series creates a captivating world worth watching.
Following that, For All Mankind is set to return again for season 6, which will presumably bring it almost in line with the modern day. As the show embraces the challenge of imagining an alternative present shaped by a unique past, it continues to stand out as one of the most thoroughly intriguing shows in the sci-fi space.
