Apple TV is home to not only some of the biggest sci-fi shows in the world but also some of the most popular series ever made. The platform first stepped into the spotlight on the back of Ted Lasso, the critically acclaimed comedy starring Jason Sudeikis that has aired three hit seasons with a fourth on the way. Apple TV also kicked things off with sci-fi sleeper hits like See, which stars Jason Momoa, but the platform has really leaned into its sci-fi side of things the last few years with shows like Invasion, Foundation, and Pluribus.

One of Apple TV’s biggest sci-fi shows is Severance, the twisted series starring Adam Scott as Mark Scout, a man who works at Lumon Industries. Some employees at Lumon opt to undergo a procedure known as severance, which completely splits them into two people — when someone is at work, they have no access to their outside memories, and vice versa. The show aired its first season back in 2022, and it returned to Apple TV last year. Collider exclusively reported a few weeks ago via an interview with star John Turturro that Severance Season 3 will begin filming this summer.

News broke this afternoon that, after two full seasons of Severance being produced under the Fifth Season banner, Apple TV has now acquired the show for its third season and any potential future seasons. This deal was made for around $70 million, according to the new report, but it allows unprecedented freedom over the show’s production moving forward. This is similar to what happened between Silo and AMC Studios after Season 1, and the show has since been renewed for three more seasons. Apple reportedly would like to see Severance run for at least four seasons, and the streamer already has ideas for potential spin-offs.

When Does ‘Severance’ Season 3 Come Out?

While Apple TV has yet to officially announce a release date or window for Severance Season 3, we can safely say that the show will not premiere before the end of this year. This comes as quite a disappointment, especially after director Ben Stiller promised that there would be a smaller gap between Seasons 2 and 3. John Turturro recently told Collider’s Perri Nemiroff that filming will commence in July, and if the timeline for Season 3 is anything like the first two seasons, the show will likely be filming through the end of the year. A release date late in 2027 is most likely.

Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of Severance Season 3 and watch the first two seasons on Apple TV.
