‘Apex’ Trailer: Charlize Theron Survives the Australian Wilderness

1 week ago 9

This spring, Netflix subscribers will find out whether the harshest predators in the Australian wilderness are any match for Charlize Theron. The “Mad Max: Fury Road” star headlines the latest thriller from Baltasar Kormákur, in which she plays a thrillseeker whose dream of navigating a dangerous river puts her in the crosshairs of something truly dangerous.

Theron is joined by co-stars Taron Egerton and Eric Bana in the survival thriller, which dropped its first trailer today. The script was written by Jeremy Robbins, who is best known for his work on the 2018 TV iteration of “The Purge.”

An official logline for the film reads: “When an adrenaline junkie sets out to conquer a menacing river, she discovers that nature isn’t the only thing out for blood.”

Producers on the film include Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and David Ready, for Chernin Entertainment; Ian Bryce for Ian Bryce Productions; Theron, A.J. Dix, and Beth Kono for Secret Menu; and Kormákur for RVK Studios. Ray Angelic, Will McCance, and Dawn Olmstead serve as executive producers.

Apex” appears to be a return to thrillers for Kormákur, who has directed genre hits such as “Two Guns,” “Contraband,” and “Beast.” He mixed things up with his last film, the intimate COVID-19 drama “Touch,” to which IndieWire awarded a Critic’s Pick.

“Much of the film’s beauty lies in the wholesomeness of Kristofer as a character. Even as a dying man whose life didn’t go according to plan, he’s driven not by bitterness or regret, but a simple desire to find the woman he never stopped loving,” my review read. “The cruelty of nature might have turned him into the ultimate unreliable narrator, but Ólafsson embodies the character with so much empathy and curiosity that it’s easy to get wrapped up in the narrative tapestry he weaves from the fragments of his own memories. The result is a film whose elegance is all the more staggering because it came from the man who directed ‘2 Guns’ and ‘Beast.’”

“Apex” will kick off a busy year for Theron, who will next appear as Circe in Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey.” Other upcoming roles for the actress include Justin Lin’s “Two for the Money” and David Weil’s “Tyrant.”

“Apex” begins streaming on Netflix on Friday, April 24. Watch the trailer below.
