Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, is set to sit down for a private dinner with President Donald Trump at the White House on September 29. It will be their first one-on-one meeting, and it arrives after a year that has been, to put it diplomatically, a bit rocky between the AI safety company and the current administration.
The dinner, first reported by Axios on September 27, lands just one day before a broader White House gathering of AI CEOs to discuss the future of artificial intelligence.
A relationship in need of repair
Amodei has publicly called for slowing AI development, pointing to mounting concerns about job displacement and safety risks. Trump has taken the opposite position, dismissing AI risks as a “hoax” and framing breakneck innovation as essential for keeping the US ahead of China in the global AI race.
That philosophical gap has produced real consequences. Earlier in 2026, the Pentagon designated Anthropic as a supply-chain risk, a label that triggered legal challenges over the company’s military contracts. Then in June, export controls landed on Anthropic’s advanced models, including Mythos 5 and Fable 5, over security vulnerabilities related to jailbreaking.
Why both sides need this dinner
Anthropic is reportedly eyeing a major IPO later in 2026, and going public while locked in a cold war with the sitting president is not exactly ideal for investor confidence.
The meeting also comes with some political intrigue. Amodei notably missed a state dinner with Chinese President Xi Jinping due to a scheduling conflict.
The opposition is already mobilizing
Critics have circulated negative briefings about Amodei ahead of the dinner, highlighting his ties to the effective altruism movement and flagging past comments that could be spun as politically inconvenient.
