The new Anthony Mackie monster movie has debuted outside the Top 10. Mackie is a star who is likely best known for his role as Sam Wilson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which he first played in 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Wilson, who is also known as the Falcon, has taken on the mantle of the late Captain America as of the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, a Disney+ spinoff show that aired in 2021.
Although the best-known Anthony Mackie movies are likely MCU entries, he has also appeared in a wide variety of other well-known projects. This includes starring as John Doe in Peacock's video game adaptation Twisted Metal, which has been renewed for the upcoming season 2. Additionally, other major movies in which he has appeared include The Hurt Locker, The Adjustment Bureau, The Woman in the Window, What's Your Number?, The Hate U Give, Real Steel, 8 Mile, and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Cumulatively, his movies have earned more than $10 billion at the worldwide box office.
Elevation Has Had A Dismal Opening Weekend
The Anthony Mackie Movie Cratered With Its Debut
Anthony Mackie's new movie Elevation has turned out an incredibly poor opening weekend. Directed by The Adjustment Bureau's George Nolfi and co-starring Deadpool's Morena Baccarin and The Finder's Maddie Hasson, the movie takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity is besieged by monsters who only prowl below 8,000 feet. Mackie plays Will, a single father who goes on a deadly adventure to save his son's life. Elevation reviews have been middling to negative, earning the movie a 54% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Elevation was co-written by SEAL Team showrunner John Glenn along with two of the show's writers, Jacob Roman and Kenny Ryan.
Per The Numbers, as of Sunday morning, Elevation is projected to earn a 3-day opening weekend of just $1.2 million. This has led it to debut outside the domestic Top 10 chart entirely, as it has fallen below the $1.47 million earned by the No. 10 title, Terrifier 3. While the Mackie movie is only playing in 1,416 theaters, which is relatively few for a wide release, its per-screen average is also perilously low at $837. To compare, the Top 200 per-screen averages of all time range between $45,436 and $793,376 while the Bottom 200 range between $38 and $685.
Our Take On The Elevation Box Office
Mackie Probably Won't Be Dinged By This Debut
Ultimately, this opening weekend will probably not affect Anthony Mackie's prospects. Its slim $18 million budget means that it could become profitable if it becomes a streaming success, even though it may not break even in theaters. Additionally, the star is the lead of the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World, an MCU installment that admittedly comes during a shaky time for the franchise but seems destined to at least make several hundred million dollars, given the precedent set by the rest of the universe. This should put him back on firm ground as a bankable leading star.
