Betty Robertson is a Contributor at ScreenRant. She's new to Entertainment Journalism, starting her career with it in 2026. Prior to joining Valnet, she was a full time Writer and Narrative Designers for Games like Assassin's Creed, Alien: Rogue Incursion, Lovelink, and Poppy Playtime.

Jennifer loves TV, especially science fiction. She also loves late-night talk shows, due to her insomnia. Alien: Earth is definitely one of her favorite shows, and she jumps on any chance she gets to write about it. Even on her days off, she will claim an Alien Earth article if one is available.

She is an award-winning screenwriter, a member of BAFTA, and a contributor to UBC's Game Writing Program.

When she's not writing she's playing sports (soccer, softball, basketball, and pickleball), watching travel shows, or walking her dog, Banana.

Anne Hathaway's R-rated sci-fi horror is officially streaming on Netflix after being severely underrated, according to the actress herself.

Hathaway is known for being an actress with many talents, including going from starring in a comedy such as The Devil Wears Prada to Interstellar. The actress rose to fame following the release of Disney's The Princess Diaries franchise in 2001, and went on her way to winning an Oscar in 2012 for Best Supporting Actress in Les Misérables.

Anne Hathaway's kaiju black comedy, Colossal has stomped its way onto Netflix. The 2016 film had a strong critical reception (currently resting at 82% on Rotten Tomatoes) but failed to find its core audience. Hathaway hopes that maybe this time, Colossal will be given a warm welcome.

"When it arrived in theatres in 2017, it shattered box office records and became the shining hope of all low-budget indies that if you stick to your guns, you can make it big and transcend it all.

Jk, no one saw it 😂

BUT it just landed on Netflix!! So if you have the inclination, maybe 2026 is finally Colossal’s year. It’s funny and strange and silly/smart and great (just my opinion… and 82% of critics on RT so…)

Hope you give it a go! Stay weird! 😈 🫶"

Colossal was praised for its high-concept execution of a story of using giant monsters to tackle inner demons. The protagonist, Gloria (Hathaway) is an alcoholic struggling with her sense of control and her relationships. She's kicked out of her home and relationship by boyfriend, Tim (Legion's Dan Stevens), and moves back to her hometown.

While in her hometown, she encounters an old friend, Oscar (Jason Sudeikis), who offers her a job at his bar. What looks to be a drama about overcoming addiction takes a sci-fi twist when Hathaway learns that her nocturnal activities at a playground are manifesting as a kaiju that terrorizes Seoul, South Korea.

The huge monster from Colossal.

The film's creative premise garnered early attention from critics and audiences alike. However, after a successful launch at TIFF, it's mainstream theater run didn't quite meet the numbers the creative team hoped.

Hathaway came across the project after being "in a little bit of an artistic no-man's land." She sought out scripts similar to Ben Wheatley's A Field in England after being shown the film by Jonathan Demme. Colossal's genre-bending structure and deeply personal story resonated with her.

Hathaway's performance as Gloria is unyielding in its fidelity to the uncomfortable reality of addiction. Later, the codependent relationship forming with Sudeikis' Oscar mirrors many toxic relationships brought on by addiction and abuse. The weight of real world issues keeps the explosive final act grounded, even with the unique premise.

ScreenRant's Kristy Puchko got to sit down with director, Nacho Vigalondo, to talk about the film at SXSW back in 2017 and this is what he had to say:

"This movie is absolutely filled with personal stuff. It's ultimately autobiographical. I'm her most of the times. I just put myself in her shoes. I felt her. Her situation in the beginning when she's totally out of control, I've been there. Not in the same terms, but I've felt out of control…But he's also some part of me, that I don't want to represent me.

So it's interesting to make them fight. To make one flawed part of myself fight with another flawed part of myself. It's a way to explore yourself. Making fiction is the only way you can turn therapy into a profitable thing. You’re depressed? You hate yourself?

Art can fix you."

Colossal served as an "art as catharsis" project for its director and its star. Many viewers resonated with Gloria's story, and the power of taking control of one's own flaws. It is now streaming on Netflix.
