Animal Crossing Deluxe Makes A GameCube Classic Even Better

While Animal Crossing fans are eagerly anticipating any news from Nintendo regarding a new game, this is the perfect time to take a look at some of the older games in the series. Particularly the game that started it all, at least in North America, the original Animal Crossing title for the Nintendo GameCube. Of course, playing a game that's 25 years old could benefit from a little help.

Despite there being several leaks and rumors for the past several years saying that the next Animal Crossing game is nearly here, so far there really hasn't been any official news. The adorable life sim series is one of the biggest franchises for Nintendo, and has been an even bigger success since Animal Crossing: New Horizons released in 2020. Thankfully, ACNH did get a massive update 3.0 at the beginning of 2026, but talented fans have now made it possible to try updated versions of older titles as well.

Animal Crossing Deluxe ROM Hack Adds New Elements

Animal Crossing Deluxe is a ROM Hack created by Cuyler36 for the original GameCube game. This modded version of the game expands upon the original by adding new town elements and additional NPC dialogue, much of which comes from the Japanese Doubutsu no Mori E+. Plus, there are several quality-of-life features, like countdown timers, a bulletin board, widescreen view, and much better inventory management.

Some of the other things added include eight new K.K. Slider songs, several villagers and decorations brought over from the Doubutsu no Mori E+ title, and much more.

This modded Animal Crossing Deluxe is still being worked on and is currently listed as being on version 0.43.3, so there are likely to be even more changes coming. In order to play Deluxe, you must have a clean copy of your GameCube Animal Crossing disc image and then apply Cuyler36's patch. For more detailed instructions, there is an official Discord server for the mod where others can help and discussions about it are common.

Animal Crossing Deluxe isn't the first time an expanded version of older Animal Crossing titles has been modded. Earlier this year, another creative user did a similar type of improvement with Animal Crossing: City Folk Deluxe.

Could Help Scratch That Itch While We Wait For The Next Animal Crossing Game

Many Animal Crossing fans started the series during the COVID-19 pandemic when ACNH made its way into our hearts and homes as an opportunity to connect with others safely. Therefore, while we are anxiously waiting for the next Animal Crossing announcement to happen, hopefully releasing an even better game with new locations, this is the perfect time for those who are new to the series to go back and take a look at where it all started.

Mods and ROM hacks like Animal Crossing Deluxe make this a much more approachable prospect. Though the original games are still a lot of fun in their vanilla versions, having those extra quality-of-life features can help overcome some of the frustrations that could otherwise turn people away from these older editions of Animal Crossing.
