EXCLUSIVE: The Veterans has boarded sales on Andy Garcia’s starry noir Diamond ahead of its world premiere Out of Competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
The L.A.-set contemporary tale with period sensibilities stars Garcia as Joe Diamond, a man out of time and urban legend with an emotional traumatic past.
His gift is an uncanny ability to solve crimes that leave the LAPD baffled, armed only with the savvy and dry humor reminiscent of the gumshoe detectives of the noir genre.
Garcia also wrote and directed the film, which has been close to 15 years in the making and is billed as a love letter to L.A. and a homage to the great noir films of the past.
It is the third feature directorial project for Garcia after the 1993 documentary, Cachao… Como Su Ritmo No Hay Dos, and 2005’s The Lost City.
Garcia has gathered a starry cast which includes Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread), Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Rosemarie DeWitt (La La Land), with the film also reuniting him with The Lost City cast members Bill Murray (Lost in Translation) and Dustin Hoffman (Rain Man).
Further cast include Demián Bichir (A Better Life, The Hateful Eight), Danny Huston (Succession), LaTanya Richardson Jackson (The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey), Yul Vazquez (Severance), Robert Patrick (Terminator 2), and Rachel Ticotin (The Act).
Garcia was last in Cannes with Ocean’s Eleven in 2007 and before that Things To Do In Denver When You’re Dead which played in Un Certain Regard in 1995.
Vincent Maraval and Kim Fox’s The Veterans will handle international sales, with CAA Media Finance looking after North American rights.
A CineSon Entertainment production, the film was produced by Jai Stefan for Shrink Media, Frank Mancuso Jr. and Paul Soriano from Black Cap Pictures and TEN17P.
Black Cap Pictures and Nexis Entertainment financed the film and will serve as executive producers led by Simon Heo and Nikki Romero, with Soriano also serving as producer. Executive producers include John Ahn, Wendy Lee, and Nino Cuccinello. For Oscura Film, Marco Vicini, and Fernando Tsai.
The Veterans is also in Cannes with James Gray’s Palme d’Or Contender Paper Tiger as well as upcoming pictures Mutiny by Jean-François Richet, starring Jason Statham, and Takashi Miike’s next film starring Charli XCX and Milly Alcock.
