After making her presence felt with a handful of supporting roles in major films such as No Time to Die and Blade Runner 2049, Ana de Armas was anointed as a star with a potential awards contender and franchise of her own. Neither strategy fully paid off, although she did earn an Oscar nod for the highly divisive Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde. De Armas' attempt at mainstream box office success, however, was even less fruitful. She was chosen to lead a new theatrical spin-off movie set in the John Wick universe. The movie underperformed at the box office but has been on a path to redemption over the last few months on home video. However, it will face a new hurdle on this path next month, when it leaves its current streaming home.
The movie in question, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, featured de Armas as the titular assassin with Keanu Reeves appearing in an extended cameo. He was originally supposed to make a shorter appearance, but was brought in as a Hail Mary when the production ran into difficulties. It was reported that Lionsgate wasn't pleased with director Len Wiseman's original cut, and with an entire franchise's future at risk, decided to bring in Chad Stahelski to oversee reshoots. Stahelski has since been appointed the overall creative director of the franchise, having directed all four John Wick solo installments to massive critical and commercial success. With Ballerina, producers reportedly decided to beef up the action sequences and inject a heavier dose of Reeves.
Here's How Long You Have Left to Watch 'Ballerina' at Its Current Streaming Home
While the movie earned mostly positive reviews, it struggled to break out at the box office. Ballerina grossed around $130 million worldwide against a budget that reportedly grew to $90 million. Ballerina now holds a "Certified Fresh" 75% critics' score and a "Verified Hot" 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The aggregator website's consensus reads, "Equipping a steely Ana de Armas with creatively brutal action choreography and a pleasingly kooky origin story, Ballerina pirouettes gracefully onto the Wickverse's center stage." Also starring Norman Reedus, Lance Reddick, Ian McShane, Gabriel Byrne, and Anjelica Huston, the movie is currently available on Starz but will leave the service on March 24, which gives you just over a month to check it out there. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
