EXCLUSIVE: After acquiring rights to Jennifer Weiner‘s New York Times bestseller The Griffin Sisters’ Greatest Hits in a competitive auction, Universal Pictures has brought on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel‘s Amy Sherman-Palladino to write and direct a feature adaptation.
While plot details for the adaptation are being kept under wraps, the book examines the estrangement and reconciliation of Cassie and Zoe Griffin, a pair of sisters who skyrocketed to pop stardom in the early 2000s, only to come undone as a duo amid industry pressure, unspoken grievances, and an episode of betrayal.
Following its release on April 8, 2025, the book became an instant New York Times Best Seller and was a Book of the Month selection. The paperback edition will be published by William Morrow in June.
Stacey Sher, the two-time Academy Award nominee behind Django Unchained and Erin Brokovich, will produce the feature take, with Weiner exec producing. SVP of Production Lexi Barta and Director of Production Development Jacqueline Garell are overseeing the project for the studio.
Coming off of Prime Video’s ballet-themed dramedy Étoile, where she was creator, writer and director, Sherman-Palladino has most recently been in production on a Netflix adaptation of the classic children’s book Eloise, starring Mae Schenk and Ryan Reynolds, directing from her own script written with Hannah Marks and Linda Woolverton. She also recently penned a new adaptation of Once Upon a Mattress, starring Sutton Foster on Broadway and in Los Angeles. Sherman-Palladino created, exec produced, directed and wrote Prime Video’s lauded Rachel Brosnahan comedy The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which won 20 Emmys and countless other accolades over the course of its five-season run. Otherwise best known for creating the WB’s Gilmore Girls, starring Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, she is repped by CAA.
Weiner’s books have spent over five years on the New York Times bestseller list — several times at #1 — with more than 11 million copies in print in 36 countries. Her 2002 novel In Her Shoes was adapted for film by 20th Century Fox in 2005, with Cameron Diaz, Toni Collette and Shirley MacLaine starring. Weiner is also known for works like Good in Bed, Little Earthquakes, and Goodnight Nobody, among many others. She is repped by Park, Fine & Brower Literary Management, Verve, Good Fear, and Miloknay Weiner.
