EXCLUSIVE: Amazon MGM Studios has snapped up rights to A Stage Set for Villains, the debut novel from New York-based writer and social media strategist Shannon J. Spann, which went straight to the top of the New York Times’ Young Adult Hardcover bestseller list in its opening week. The book will be developed for film.

Published by Entangled Publishing on February 3rd, A Stage Set for Villains follows a cursed teen in a divided land who infiltrates a mysterious theater run by irresistible and deadly godlike beings where mortals compete for immortality in a ruthlessly lethal competition. As she moves deeper into the theater, the fabric of her reality unravels, and a cure for her childhood curse is the least of her worries.

Liz Pelletier and Sherryl Clark will produce the feature take under their Premeditated banner — an extension of Pelletier’s Entangled — as part of their first-look film and television deal with the studio. Premeditated’s Director of Development Cayla Tyne is overseeing development of the project.

A Stage Set for Villains is the second consecutive title from Entangled’s new YA label Mayhem to debut atop the charts. The book is also one of many popular works Premeditated has recently set up for feature adaptation at Amazon MGM, the most recent being an adaptation of Elise Kova’s #1 New York Times bestselling fantasy novel Dragon Cursed, on which we recently reported.

Other books of theirs up for feature adaptation at Amazon MGM include #1 New York Times bestselling romantasy Shield of Sparrows, time-travel comedy Repeat After Me, rom-com 69 Million Things I Hate About You, and the thriller Survive. On the television side, Premeditated is producing several buzzy book franchise adaptations, including Fourth Wing and Lux at Amazon MGM Studios and Assistant to the Villain at Legendary.

Premeditated and Entangled/Mayhem are represented by IAG and Caitlin DiMotta at TroyGould PC.  Spann is repped by Ellen Goff at HG Literary.
