2025 is filled with many important gaming anniversaries, including the 20th anniversary of the groundbreaking Resident Evil 4 and the intense action experience of God of War. Next year will also help us call back to our former love of plastic instruments with the first Guitar Hero rocking its way to homes around the world 20 years ago.
January 2025 anniversaries
January celebrates the anniversaries of one of the first 3D fighting games Battle Arena Toshinden, and a story-focused favorite from the PS3 era, Life is Strange, which has since spawned many sequels. Since its launch in January 2015 ten years ago, the Dying Light series has sold over 30 million copies. The first Dying Light received a 7/10 review score from Destructoid a decade ago. Resident Evil 4 also revolutionized the third-person shooter genre.

February 2025 marks the 25th anniversary of one of the most important PC games ever, The Sims. This month, the famous Lego series of video games from Traveller’s Tales began with the Star Wars franchise. Additionally, the critically acclaimed studio Double Fine Productions broke into the scene with their mind-themed 3D platformer Psychonauts. The Legend of Zelda also had its arguably most creepy entry with Majora’s Mask on the Nintendo 64.

There aren’t as many releases during the summer season, and unfortunately, this is true in May. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt made a huge splash when it released in 2015, however, with its huge open world and expansive storyline. It has since sold over 50 million copies. Splatoon also made a splash with its ink-based take on the third-person shooter genre.

June 2025 gaming anniversaries
June 2025 celebrates the anniversary of some treasure cult classics. The Legend of Dragoon is a beloved JRPG PS1 classic that will have its 25th anniversary. Additionally, Rocksteady’s last great game Batman: Arkham Knight finished the studio’s great trilogy 10 years ago. Her Story received a 10/10 review from Destructoid back in 2015 as well, marking it as one of the best games of that year.

Final Fantasy IX is the last PS1 entry to launch on the system and impressed many with its more fantasy-based setting. Facade also released with a creepy premise of characters reacting to what you text.
