Richard Craig is a Senior Author at Screen Rant covering film and TV. Richard has also written extensively about horror and film soundtracks, contributing a chapter to the first major academic collection on the folk horror genre, The Routledge Companion to Folk Horror. Richard is also a performing musician and holds an MA in Music and Sound Art.

Martin Scorsese is approaching his mid-80s with a workload that would make directors half his age look lazy. Following Killers of the Flower Moon, the filmmaker has continued developing an unusually broad collection of movies, from historical epics and literary adaptations to documentaries and gangster dramas. Several would reunite Scorsese with Leonardo DiCaprio, while others explore subjects that Scorsese has never previously tackled on this scale.

The projects are also at radically different stages. Some have completed principal photography and entered post-production, while others remain dependent on screenplay revisions, financing, or a formal green-light. That makes Scorsese's upcoming filmography less a conventional release schedule than a constantly shifting collection of projects in progress.

There is also considerable variety in Scorsese's responsibilities. He is directing and producing some , writing alongside directing on another, and serving as producer on a project that will be directed by John Carney. From an eerie European adoption story to ancient Mediterranean shipwrecks and the rise of organized crime in Hawaii, Martin Scorsese boasts several major upcoming movies.

What Happens At Night

What Happens At Night is currently in post-production, making it one of Scorsese's closest upcoming narrative features. He directs and produces the Apple Original Films adaptation, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence starring and also serving as producers.

Based on Peter Cameron's novel, What Happens At Night follows an American couple travellng to a remote, snowbound European city to adopt a child, only for their plans to unravel amid eerie encounters, moral ambiguity and the crumbling state of their marriage.

Mads Mikkelsen, Patricia Clarkson, Jared Harris and Welker White join DiCaprio and Lawrence. Principal photography took place in the Czech Republic from February 27 to April 9, 2026. At time of writing, What Happens At Night had moved into post-production, but no release date has been confirmed.

The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, And Murder

Leonardo DiCaprio in Shutter Island

Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio acquired the screen rights to David Grann's The Wager in July 2022, with Scorsese attached to direct and produce and DiCaprio attached to star and produce. The project would reunite the key creative partnership behind Killers of the Flower Moon, adapting another Grann work for Apple.

Scorsese has discussed The Wager alongside Roosevelt as one of the projects he and DiCaprio have been developing, but it remains in development rather than active production. Grann's story centers on the British warship HMS Wager, which sailed for South America in 1740 before being wrecked off Patagonia in 1741.

The survivors are stranded on a desolate island, where extreme weather, starvation and the struggle to maintain order expose increasingly ugly divisions among the crew. When competing accounts of what happened emerge, a survival story becomes an investigation into mutiny and murder.

Shipwrecks Of Sicily

Shipwrecks of Sicily is perhaps the most unexpected project on Scorsese's slate. The documentary explores ancient Mediterranean shipwrecks and maritime trade through the work of underwater archaeologist Lisa Briggs of Cranfield University, who uses DNA analysis and other scientific tools to investigate the ships, crews and cargo that disappeared beneath Sicilian waters.

Scorsese serves as director and executive producer alongside Briggs, and it's currently listed as in post-production. The subject also has a deeply personal connection to Scorsese. His paternal grandparents were born in Polizzi Generosa, which is among the locations involved in the production.

Other sites include the 2,500-year-old Archaic Greek wreck off Santa Maria del Focallo, Marausa II, Gela II, the Columns of Taormina, Ustica, Trapani, Selinunte and Pantelleria. Filming has also covered Marsala-Lilibeo, Cave di Cusa, Favignana, Mozia, Erice and Sicilian museums.

Roosevelt

Roosevelt is currently in development, but has the potential to become another major Scorsese-DiCaprio collaboration. Scorsese is attached as both director and producer, while DiCaprio will portray Theodore Roosevelt. Scott Bloom is credited as screenwriter, with Appian Way and Sikelia Productions attached as production companies.

The biographical drama follows one of the most extraordinary political careers in American history, examining Roosevelt's transformation from a privileged New York politician into a Rough Rider, governor, vice president and ultimately the 26th President of the United States.

Scorsese has previously confirmed that he and DiCaprio were discussing both Roosevelt and The Wager, although the Hollywood strikes disrupted their plans. For now, Roosevelt remains a development project, meaning DiCaprio's transformation into the famously energetic president is still some way from reaching cameras.

Midnight Vendetta

Midnight Vendetta is another historical crime drama that sees Martin Scorsese return to the subject of organized crime, this time in New Orleans rather than New York. As of October 4, 2026, the film is in post-production, with Scorsese directing and producing through Sikelia Productions alongside LBI Entertainment. Eric Roth wrote the screenplay and Leonardo DiCaprio stars.

Set around 1890, Midnight Vendetta centers on the Sicilian Mafia in New Orleans and the rise of tensions surrounding Police Chief David Hennessy. Hennessy's assassination became a pivotal event in the city's history, ultimately leading to the notorious mass lynching of Sicilian prisoners.

The material gives Scorsese another opportunity to examine the intersection of organized crime, immigration, political power and anti-Italian prejudice in American history. With DiCaprio once again in front of his camera, Midnight Vendetta represents another major collaboration between two filmmakers.

Home

Scorsese is taking on writing, directing and producing duties for Home, his adaptation of Marilynne Robinson's acclaimed Gilead novel. Leonardo DiCaprio is attached to star, while Todd Field is producing alongside Scorsese's Sikelia Productions, DiCaprio's Appian Way Productions and LBI Entertainment. The film remains in development.

Home takes place concurrently with the events of Robinson's Gilead, but shifts the focus to the household of Reverend Robert Boughton, John Ames' closest friend. The story explores Boughton's family as his troubled son Jack returns home after years away, bringing old wounds, religious questions and complicated relationships back to the surface.

Scorsese and Field worked on an earlier version of the screenplay before the writers' strike, with Scorsese subsequently continuing to develop the project. Home is a markedly quieter proposition than his gangster epics, but its concerns with faith, guilt and damaged families fit naturally within his wider filmography.

Fascinating Rhythm

Fascinating Rhythm is one of the more mysterious projects on Scorsese's slate. Currently in pre-production, the film is described as following a young woman on a magical journey through both past and present-day New York City.

Plot details remain limited, with the simple listed storyline: “A young woman's magical journey through past and present New York City.” However, the title strongly suggests a connection to George and Ira Gershwin's classic song "Fascinating Rhythm."

Given Scorsese's lifelong love of music and New York history, the premise has obvious appeal. Few filmmakers have chronicled New York's cultural identity more effectively, whether through Mean Streets, After Hours, The King of Comedy, Gangs of New York, or numerous music documentaries. The project also offers the possibility of seeing Scorsese tackle a more overtly fantastical style than audiences typically associate with his work.

Untitled Hawaii-Set Crime Drama

Leonardo DiCaprio’s Teddy Daniels looking surprised and worried in Shutter Island

Scorsese is attached to direct and produce an untitled Hawaii-set crime drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. Nick Bilton is writing the screenplay, with Scorsese's Sikelia Productions, DiCaprio's Appian Way, Johnson's Seven Bucks Productions and Blunt's Ledbury Productions involved. It is currently listed as in pre-production.

The true-crime story centres on Wilford “Nappy” Pulawa and The Company, the organized-crime syndicate that built a powerful criminal empire in Hawaii during the 1960s and '70s. The film's official synopsis describes a charismatic mob boss waging war against mainland corporations and rival syndicates while attempting to protect his ancestral land.

The project has been likened to Goodfellas and The Departed, but its Hawaiian setting gives Scorsese a very different criminal history to explore. In 2026, Bilton was undertaking a major screenplay revision incorporating Martin Scorsese's notes, with the movie expected to move quickly if 20th Century Studios gives it a green-light.
