All 12 Upcoming Ryan Coogler TV Shows & Movies

3 hours ago 8

Ryan Coogler has made quite a name for himself over the past several years. Best known for writing and directing films, including Black Panther, Creed, and the hit Sinners (which earned him his first Oscar), he’s taken the film world by storm. He’s also turned his sights to the small screen, producing shows like Marvel's Eyes of Wakanda and Ironheart.

It's not surprising, then, that Coogler has a slew of upcoming film and television projects in the works. Possibly the most exciting are his The X-Files reboot (filming has wrapped on the pilot, but the future is currently in limbo) and Black Panther 3. Coogler and his production company, Proximity Media, have plenty of other options to keep them busy. Each project is at a different stage of production, so some might take a while to arrive.

Additionally, many of Coogler’s known, upcoming projects, including The X-Files, are attached to Hulu under his Disney deal. However, the Disney deal ended earlier this year, and since then, he and Proximity Media have struck a new one with Netflix. It’s currently unclear how this might affect projects already in the works for Disney/Hulu.

Wrong Answer (Movie)

ScreenRant reported in 2017 that Coogler and frequent collaborator Michael B. Jordan would be re-teaming for the film Wrong Answer. It’s currently listed as an "optioned property" on IMDb, so its future remains unclear, and little is known about it. The film is based on the 2014 New Yorker article of the same name by Rachel Aviv, about the real-life Atlanta public schools cheating scandal.

The scandal resulted from the No Child Left Behind initiative, which tied federal funding to states administering assessments at certain grade levels. This pressured teachers and school systems to raise standardized test scores and effectively punished those who couldn’t meet the expected quotas. This controversial act sparked the Atlanta cheating scandal, which aimed to aid at-risk schools. At least 44 schools and 178 educators were implicated.

Coogler will direct Wrong Answer, while Jordan will star as teacher Damany Lewis, who led the cheating scheme. Plan B will produce, and Ta-Nehisi Coates will write the script. Aviv, the article’s author, will also serve as a consultant. Currently, IMDb lists no other actors.

Untitled X-Files Reboot (TV Series)

In 2023, The X-Files' original creator, Chris Carter, let the cat out of the bag on the podcast On the Coast With Gloria Macarenko: Coogler was set to develop a reboot of the fan-favorite sci-fi series. Fast-forward to 2026, and while the reboot still hasn’t appeared on our screens, an X-Files pilot episode has been filmed, starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himash Patel as the series' mismatched FBI agents.

As for why the X-Files pilot hasn’t led to a series greenlight, Hulu has recently brought back the old-school method of filming a pilot episode before executives decide whether to pick up a series. This traditional approach has fallen by the wayside since the advent of streaming, but it can help cut development costs and let creative teams fix issues before the show airs. Disney hasn't confirmed a decision yet. (Hulu's recent attempt to reboot Buffy the Vampire Slayer failed to get picked up after its pilot.)

The X-Files pilot is also rumored to be two hours long, and earlier this year, behind-the-scenes sources claimed Coogler allegedly asked Disney to consider it as a feature film (via World of Reel). Nothing about the reboot has been publicly confirmed thus far, though, so when or where it might air is unknown.

Untitled Sundance Braden King Project (Docuseries)

At the beginning of this year, Deadline reported Coogler's involvement in a three-part Hulu docuseries. The Searchlight Television docuseries will "chronicle the legacy of the Sundance Institute, tracing the story of the creative incubator that shaped many of the most influential filmmakers of our time." Braden King is slated to direct; his movie Here was developed at the Sundance Institute's Screenwriters and Directors Labs in 2007 and premiered at the festival in 2011.

The as-yet-untitled project will incorporate archival footage from decades past that has never been seen before and will show how creatives like Coogler and others discovered their creative freedom through the organization. Coogler will serve as an executive producer, along with producer Mark Monroe and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Lynette Howell Taylor. The untitled Sundance series is currently in pre-production with no estimated release date.

Untitled Prince Musical (Movie)

In 2024, several outlets reported Coogler was attached as a producer to a still-untitled jukebox musical featuring Prince songs, set at Universal Pictures. Prince, a musical icon known for hits such as "Purple Rain" and "When Doves Cry," passed away in 2016. The untitled project has reportedly been in development since 2018, with a script written by Bryan Edward Hill, known for his work on DC's Titans television series.

Coogler’s Proximity Media is behind the film, and Rebecca Cho is an executive producer. Other producers include Zinzi Coogler, Coogler's wife and longtime collaborator; Jody Gerson, chair of the Universal Music Publishing Group; and producer and screenwriter Sev Ohanian. Little else is known about the movie, but IMDb lists it as in pre-production, so it may still be on the table for a future release.

Southern Bastards (TV Series)

Southern Bastards is based on the graphic novels by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour. It follows Roberta, a tenacious former Marine, who returns to Craw County, Alabama, while facing military charges after an incident that happened in Afghanistan. She seeks revenge on her estranged father and discovers a mess of corruption and organized crime run by the legendary, beloved Coach Boss.

Erin Kellyman is attached to play Roberta, and Tim McGraw will play Coach Boss. Kevin Bacon will star as the son of a former sheriff who ruled the town with an iron fist. Reinaldo Marcus Green is directing and executive producing. Other executive producers include Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian, and Layne Eskridge. The comic’s creators are also attached as executive producers, while Nia DaCosta and Bill Dubuque share story credit. Southern Bastards is another Hulu show, so while a pilot exists, its fate is unclear.

Sheba (TV Series)

Sheba was announced at the Sundance Film Festival in 2023, but is still in pre-production. The show is part of the Onyx Collective, a quasi-studio under the Disney umbrella that produces Hulu-exclusive content, led by Tara Duncan. Azie Tesfai (who grew up in Ethiopia) co-created the scripted drama series with Chantelle Wells (who also wrote the script). It explores the first African queen's rise to power as she aims to unite what is now known as Ethiopia.

The series draws on real events and follows Makeda as she is forced into the dangerous role of Queen of Sheba, where political intrigue and manipulation follow. Coogler’s Proximity Media is set to executive produce under its deal with Onyx Collective, with Coogler, Sev Ohanian, Kalia King, and Zinzi Coogler as executive producers. No actors or characters have been named for the series. It’s unclear whether Sheba will still air.

Scenes For Minors (TV Series)

Scenes for Minors may no longer be happening. The first mention of the TV show came in 2016, and no new information has been revealed since. IMDb lists the potential series as "development unknown."

The news of this show came after Coogler’s success with Creed and was originally called simply Minors. At the time, Coogler teamed up with Charles D. King’s diversity-focused media company Macro, acclaimed playwright and poet Chinaka Hodge, and Short Term 12’s Destin Daniel Cretton. Hodge was set to pen the script, with Cretton and Coogler as series directors. However, Macro’s website doesn’t have Scenes for Minors listed under its upcoming projects.

If the series ever comes to fruition, it would draw on Coogler, Cretton, and Hodge’s personal experiences: Coogler’s time working in a juvenile detention center, Cretton’s time working in residential foster care, and Hodge’s time as a teacher working with underserved kids. Scenes for Minors was meant to tackle how institutionalization affects children who grow up in it in a unique way; hopefully, it will come out someday.

Bitter Root (Movie)

News of a film adaptation of the comic series Bitter Root came in 2021, with Regina King set to direct for Legendary. The comic premiered in 2018. Coogler, King, Sev Ohanian, and Zinzi Coogler are attached to produce, while Bitter Root’s series creator David F. Walker is set to executive produce. Bryan Edward Hill and Sanford Greene are penning the script.

The acclaimed Image Comics series was nominated for a 2019 Ringo Award for Best Series and a 2019 Eisner Award for Best New Series. Set in 1924 during the Harlem Renaissance, the story follows the Sangeryes, a fractured family of monster hunters as they face an inconceivable evil in New York City. Bitter Root is allegedly in pre-production, with no word on when a release date or a full cast.

Black Panther 3 (Movie)

Black Panther 3, written and directed by Coogler, is the only upcoming project with an actual release date: December 15, 2028. However, there’s been no word on when filming will begin; it’s been listed as in pre-production since July 2026. It’s probably safe to assume principal photography will begin once Avengers: Secret Wars wraps, since some Black Panther 3 cast members are also in the Avengers movie.

Unsurprisingly, story details are still fairly nonexistent. What we do know is that David Jonsson is joining the franchise as T'Challa II and the next Black Panther. Audiences first met T’Challa’s son at the end of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, but he's now grown up and presumably ready to take the throne, which could create tension in Wakanda. The only other confirmed cast additions for Black Panther 3 are Letitia Wright (Shuri), Winston Duke (M'Baku), and MCU newcomer Denzel Washington, whose role has yet to be revealed.

Animorphs (TV Series)

Earlier this year, Coogler was revealed to be taking on a second ‘90s sci-fi series reboot after The X-Files: Animorphs. Based on the popular YA book series of the same name, the show will follow a group of teens who discover a hidden threat in their lives. They must deal with that while also juggling school, family, relationships, and other teen drama.

In the book series, written by Katherine Applegate and her husband, Michael Grant, the teens find out an alien race is secretly taking over the planet. However, they meet a member of another alien race who gives them the power to take on the form of any animal whose DNA they absorb. The original TV series ran from 1998 to 2000.

Bayan Wolcott is writing and executive producing the adaptation, with Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian executive producing for Proximity Media. Proximity Media's Simone Harris and Dezi Gallegos will oversee the project. Animorphs is still in development, so its release date is still unknown.
