Alien: Romulus' ending fight between Cailee Spaeny's Rain and the Offspring becomes a comic book cover in an impressive piece of retro art. Directed by Fede Alvarez, the latest installment in the Alien franchise, which began with Ridley Scott's seminal 1979 sci-fi horror, follows Rain, her android brother, Andy (David Jonsson), and other crew members as they encounter a Xenomorph threat aboard an abandoned space station. The film was a hit both critically and commercially, and the Alien: Romulus ending, in particular, was a major talking point due to its introduction of the Offspring, a Xenomorph hybrid.
Though the Offspring showdown makes for one of Alien: Romulus' most terrifying sequences, a new piece of comic-inspired art shared by Swangzhe on Instagram adds a colorful, retro twist to the encounter. The art features Rain, in silhouette, as she faces off against the lanky, skeleton-like Offspring. The image also features close-ups of both Rain and Andy, in addition to the more traditional Xenomorph and facehugger toward the top. Check out the artwork below:

Rain & Andy's Story Is Confirmed To Continue
Alien: Romulus ends with the Offspring having been launched into space, and Rain and Andy on their way to Yvaga III. The threat is seemingly gone for these two surviving characters, but it's now been confirmed that development is underway on a Romulus sequel. 20th Century Studio boss Steve Asbell shared the news in late October, teasing that Spaeny and Jonsson's characters will be a part of whatever comes next, saying, "I want to see what their story is."
Fede Álvarez's Alien: Romulus features some truly terrifying and very scary moments with several scenes that will make you jump out of your seat.
The Offspring itself may not be returning, but its introduction in the first place does speak to how Alvarez will approach the next installment. Alien: Romulus reviews were generally very positive, with praise aimed at how he recaptured the magic of the first film, while also inserting his own unique horror sensibilities. Since Alvarez will presumably be returning to helm Alien: Romulus 2, audiences can seemingly expect this mix of old and new once more, which means that additional mutations of the Xenomorph could be on the way.

Prometheus

Alien: Covenant
(2017).

The Next Movie Can't Just Repeat Romulus' Offspring Trick
Though the response was generally positive to the film, and it currently enjoys an 80% critics score and 85% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the one complaint that frequently cropped up was that parts of it felt a little too familiar to what had come before. Though the mix of homage and innovation worked for me, the film's standout sequence was the Offspring battle at the end, which was also the movie's biggest left turn.
Now that Alien: Romulus has introduced the franchise to a new generation of audiences, it would be exciting to see Alvarez lean into this approach in the sequel, retaining that core Alien atmosphere while offering more surprises and innovations. After the Offspring, however, the next film's big surprise can't just be another Xenomorph form, meaning Alvarez will have his work cut out for him in terms of keeping things feeling fresh.
Alien: Romulus is the seventh film in the Alien franchise. The movie is directed by Fede Álvarez and will focus on a new young group of characters who come face to face with the terrifying Xenomorphs. Alien: Romulus is a stand-alone film and takes place in a time not yet explored in the Alien franchise.
